LAS VEGAS -- No. 8 Marietta and No. 23 Maryville finished their non-conference schedules with impressive wins while UW-Superior earned a split on the second day of the 2021 D3hoops.com Classic.

Maryville finished its non-conference schedule with a flourish, shooting 57 percent from the floor and 70 percent from three in an 83-73 victory over Chicago. Kordell Kah's three-pointer keyed a 19-3 run for the Fighting Scots who held the Maroons without a field goal for a long stretch. Chicago whittled the Scots' lead down to 11 but Maryville put the game away at the foul line. Myles Rasnick dazzled with an array of fade-away jumpers and scored 23 points on 10 for 12 shooting for Maryville (11-0). Bryce Hopkins posted a hard-nosed double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, eight of them on offense, for Chicago (5-6).

The battle of the Pioneers went to the team from Southeastern Ohio as No. 8 Marietta surged past Transylvania, 87-74. After Transylvania pulled within six points at the half, Marietta doubled that lead in the first two minutes of the second half on two baskets by Tim Kreeger and a layup by Mason Lydic. Marietta blew the game open with a 23-5 run that pushed the score to 71-43 midway through the second half.

Kreeger led Marietta (8-2) with 19 points while Mason Lydic added 14 points and five assists. Brandon Cromwell scored 16 points for Transylvania (6-4).

Day 2 opened with UW-Superior rallying past Whittier 77-75 to earn itself a split and send the Poets home with the same 1-1 mark. Whittier jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first half but the Yellowjackets chipped away and pulled even with the Poets at the half. The UW-Superior defense continued to hound the Whittier offense and converted 23 Poet turnovers into 28 points. UW-Superior got a late jumper from J'Vaun Walker that extended its lead to six, 73-67, and then Eli Vogel sealed the victory with four late free throws.

Vogel finished with a team-high 20 points for UW-Superior (4-8) and Walker set a D3hoops.com Classic record with six steals to go with his 12 points and five assists. Ahmad Young led Whittier (5-5) with 23 points, giving him 56 in two games and a spot on the All-Tournament team. The win is the first for UW-Superior in two trips to the D3hoops.com Classic.

Day 2 closed with a thriller as No. 19 Mary Hardin-Baylor edged Pacific Lutheran 56-53 on a Josiah Johnson three-pointer in the closing minute. The Lutes held Johnson who averages 28 points per game in check and led most of the way. The Crusaders had the ball down two with less than a minute to play when Johnson took the ball outside the arc and hit a three over an outstreched Pacific Lutheran defender, putting Mary Hardin-Baylor up one. The Lutes came up empty on its next possession with a potential winning shot rimming out, and Ty Prince grabbed the board for the Crusaders. He converted both free throws after being fouled and Mary Hardin-Baylor survived a game-tying three attempt at the buzzer.

Johnson finished with 15 points in 26 minutes on 5 for 17 shooting for Mary Hardin-Baylor (8-1). Sean McCurdy paced Pacific Lutheran (7-4) with 15 points.
