Bates women's basketball opens NESCAC play with 73-42 win over Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Four Bobcats finished in double figures scoring and the Bates women's basketball team rolled to a 73-42 win over Connecticut College Sunday afternoon in NESCAC action. 

The Bobcats (11-2, 1-0 NESCAC) shot 53.4 percent from the floor, their best shooting percentage in one game this season. The 31-point margin of victory for Bates is their largest in a NESCAC contest since 2006. Sunday's win is the Bates women's basketball team's first road victory over the Camels (5-9, 0-2 NESCAC) since 2010.

Senior captain Morgan Kennedy (Oklahoma City, Okla.) led all scorers with 19 points on 7-9 shooting, knocking down 4-6 from three-point range. Sophomore Elsa Daulerio (Harpswell, Maine) tallied 14 points on 7-10 shooting, a game-high eight rebounds, and matched her career-high with five blocked shots. Junior Alexandra Long (Newtown, Pa.) also netted 14 points, hitting 6-9 from the floor. Long grabbed six rebounds, dished out a game-high six assists, blocked two shots, and recorded a steal. Sophomore Sophie Spolter (Blacklick, Ohio) chipped in 12 points on 5-8 shooting off the bench. She tallied six rebounds, three assists, and a blocked shot.

After an Arliana Torres layup, the Bobcats trailed the Camels 13-11 with 3:49 left in the first quarter. Daulerio, who scored 10 of her 14 points in the first 10 minutes of action, tied the game at 13 with a layup. Then first-year Sarah Hughes (Rumson, N.J.) put the Bobcats ahead for good, drilling a three-pointer with 2:27 remaining in the first quarter. The 10-0 run culminated with a short Spolter jumper, giving Bates a 21-13 lead through one.

Both offenses cooled off in the second quarter, but Bates outscored the hosts 14-9 to take a commanding 35-22 lead into halftime.

The Bobcats continued to pull away from the Camels down the stretch, outscoring Conn. College 21-17 in the third quarter, and dominating the fourth quarter by a count of 17-3. 

Bates held the Camels to just 22 percent shooting on the afternoon and dominated points in the paint, 38-12. Rebecca Oberman-Levine paced the hosts with 13 points on 5-12 shooting.

The Bobcats are back in action Monday evening when they host Rivier in a non-conference game at 5pm.
