Women’s Basketball Falls at Nationally-Ranked Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost at the University of Rochester 78-34 on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup.  

Junior Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) accounted for half of Keuka College's (3-3) scoring with 17 points. Freshman Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) was second on the team with six points.

The Yellowjackets got an opening layup 11 seconds into the game. That started a 21-0 run for the hosts to open the contest. Keuka College scored on a layup by Mary Cotter with 2:17 left in the quarter, but Rochester quickly answered with a three. Keuka closed with five unanswered, capped by a Sydney Brown three, but trailed 24-7 after one.

The second quarter was the best for the Wolves. Brown hit a three for Keuka. Later, back-to-back buckets by Brown and Killian Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) cut into the lead. Following a Yellowjacket basket, Sydney Brown hit another three to make it a 12-point game, 29-17. It was the closest the Wolves got in on Tuesday. A layup at the buzzer gave the Wolves a 13-10 edge in the second, but Keuka was still down 34-20 at the half.

Rochester regained control of the game in the third quarter. They would outscore the Wolves 27-6, making 62% of their shots while the Wolves made 20%. Rochester led 61-26 going into the final quarter.

The teams traded points early in the fourth, but Rochester would outscore Keuka 17-8 in the final quarter to defeat the Wolves 78-34.

  • Keuka College is now 2-16 all-time against the University of Rochester. The Yellowjackets have won the last eight games
  • The Yellowjackets entered Tuesday ranked 16th by the WBCA and 18th by D3Hoops.com. Keuka College remains in search of its first win over a ranked opponent in program history
  • Four Wolves tied for the team lead in rebounding. Sydney Brown, Killian Mahoney, Meg McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton), and Lauren Hill (Cobleskill, N.Y. / Cobleskill-Richmondville) all had five rebounds in the game

Up Next for Keuka College: Changed on the schedule this season, Keuka College will open Empire 8 play before the holiday break. The Wolves are on the road this weekend for a pair of conference games. The weekend begins in Oneonta, N.Y. as Keuka College plays at Hartwick College on Friday night. The Wolves then move to Troy, N.Y. as they face Russell Sage College on Saturday.
