Second Half Effort Leads Roger Williams over Gulls

More news about: Endicott

BRISTOL, R.I. – Tied at forty halfway through the second half of play, Roger Williams used a 16-6 run to defeat the Endicott Gulls 56-46 Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action. The Gulls drop to 10-7 on the year, with a 7-3 mark in CCC play, while Roger Williams improves to 10-8 (7-4 CCC) by taking this important conference test.

All nine players who took the court for Endicott contributed offensively, but none were in double digits, while Kaitlyn Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) put in 21 points for the Hawks of Roger Williams.

The Hawks led for the first ten minutes of the game before a Nicole Heffernan (Londonderry, N.H.) layup tied a low-scoring game up at 10. Bovee immediately gave the Hawks another lead by sinking a three-pointer, one of three she made on the day in six attempts. Endicott, however, scored nine of the last  fourteen points in the first half and took a three point lead into the break, capped by a three-pointer by freshman Kaitlyn Wright (Sudbury, Mass.).

Endicott improved their lead to five points to start the second half, but it would get no bigger than that, as Bovee (16 points in the second half) and the Hawks went to work. Bovee scored the next eight points for Roger Williams and then hit a three-pointer to break the 40-all deadlock with eight minutes left in the game. A Samantha Crough (Cohasset, Mass.) jumper would pull Endicott back to within one, but the Hawks held on and sprinted away in the final minutes to the ten-point victory.

Jordan Ferland (Charlestown, N.H.) led the Gulls offensively with nine points, and continued her penchant for swatting shots, collecting three more blocks after a four-block performance Wednesday night. Freshman Kayleen Whall (Foxboro, Mass.) had eight points off the bench, but the Gulls had a tough day shooting the ball, including hitting just 3-23 (13%) from behind the three-point line.

Crough fell short of scoring double-digit points for the first time in twelve games. She registered just four points on a rough shooting night (3-13), but did lead the team with nine rebounds and four assists. Endicott, however, was outdone on the boards by a 47-39 margin, as Roger Williams senior Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) led all players with 13 boards, seven of them on the offensive glass.

Heffernan contributed four steals, while Jennifer White (Lisbon, N.H.) had seven points, five rebounds and three assists for Endicott.

The Gulls will look to return to their winning ways on Tuesday night when they travel to Boston for a 5:30 showdown with Wentworth Institute of Technology. The Hawks will travel nearer to Endicott's neck of the woods as they will visit Gordon at 6:00 pm the same day.
