ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Trailing St. Mary's 65-64 with only ten seconds remaining, CUA's Kerri Confrey took the inbounds pass, dribbled the length of the court and sank a layup with one tick on the clock to lift the Cardinals to a thrilling 66-65 win on Tuesday.  The victory improves CUA to 3-1 this season, while the Seahawks fall to 3-3.   

CUA had led 62-59 with 50 seconds to go following a jumper by Jill Woerner, but Leah Cranmer came back and drilled a three for the Seahawks to tie the game for the sixth time with 35 seconds left.

A Katarina Owunna basket for the Cardinals gave them a 64-62 lead with 21 seconds to play, but again Cranmer answered with a bucket for the Seahawks and the teams were tied one more time.  Confrey fouled Cranmer on the basket and following the free throw, CUA found itself down 65-64 setting up the dramatic finish.

Woerner and Jenny McGann shared high-scoring honors for CUA with 16 points apiece, while Confrey scored eight and Emily Grabiak added seven.  The Cardinals sank eight three-pointers for the game and outrebounded the Seahawks 47-39, led by Woerner and Owunna with nine apiece. 

Confrey handed out six of the Cardinals 16 assists and Brielle Crites led the visitors with three steals.

Cranmer finished with eight points for St. Mary's, while Taylor Petrisko led the Seahawks with 16 tallies.  Sophie Pruden pulled down a team-high eight boards and Jasmine Jones was the team leader in assists with seven.

CUA jumped out to an early 11-2 lead capped by Woerner's three-pointer at the 15:35 mark of the opening half, but six straight by the Seahawks cut the Cardinals lead to 11-8 in a matter of 55 seconds.

Liz Briones' free throw with 12:43 on the first half clock put CUA on top by five, but St. Mary's answered with four straight to pull within one at 16-15.

With 6:53 to play, CUA reeled off seven straight points to take a comfortable 28-17 lead only to see the Seahawks respond with six straight to get to within five at 28-23.

Smith's layup with 1:38 remaining in the half made it a four-point game, but CUA got back-to-back three's from Rachel Ferri and Jenny McGann to open up a ten-point bulge with 46 ticks to go.  Pui Sham answered with a three of her own down the other end and that set the halftime margin at seven with CUA on top 37-30.

Sham hit another three early in the second half to bring St. Mary's to within 41-37, and a free throw by Jasmine Smith followed by a Jamie Roberts jumpers made it a one-point game with exactly 15 minutes to play.

Grabiak answered with a three for CUA to put the Cardinals in front 44-40, but Taylor Petrisko got inside for a layup and the Seahawks were back to within two.

Petrinko then wiggled free for another layup, this one coming with 10:49 to play, and that basket tied things at 48.  Back-to-back baskets by Confrey and Briones put the Cardinals in front by four, but the Seahawks responded with four straight to once again tie the game.

Grabiak's layup at the 5:33 mark put CUA in front 58-56, but Jones hit a free throw and Pruden tipped in a miss for St. Mary's to give the Seahawks their first lead since two minutes into the game at 59-58.

Owunna then tipped in a miss for CUA to put the Cardinals ahead by one, and Woerner's jumper with 50 ticks to go made it a 62-59 game, setting up the exciting finish.

The Cardinals are off until Saturday when they travel to Towson, Md. to take on Goucher in the Landmark Conference opener.  Tip-off is set for 7:30.
