More news about: St. Vincent

The 25th-ranked Saint Vincent women's basketball team opened the second half on a 17-0 run to pull away from visiting Allegheny College, defeating the Gators 70-33 in the Carey Center on Saturday night.

Brittany Sedlock led Saint Vincent with 16 points, while Maria Baroffio added 14.  Saint Vincent shot just 39.7 percent (25-for-63) for the game, but the Bearcats held the Gators to just a 20.3 percent mark, including a 4-for-34 effort in a second half in which SVC outscored the Gators 35-11.

The Bearcats also turned in a strong effort on the boards, holding a 54-37 advantage.  Ariel Rocco led SVC with a career-high 10 rebounds, while Sedlock added eight and Kathy Bianco seven.

The opening portion of the game was tight, featuring three ties and three lead changes, as Allegheny led 15-14 with 9:30 left in the first half.  Saint Vincent then looked to take control, embarking on a 12-0 run over a five-minute span, beginning with a lay up from Baroffio and capped with a Sedlock jumper, to put the Bearcats in front 25-15 with 6:14 left until the break.

Allegheny would score the game's next five points, capped with a Brittni Mohney three with 5:12 left, but Saint Vincent would come back to again extend the lead.  A pair of foul shots from Jordan Clinton with 3:47 left gave SVC back the double-digit lead, 30-20, before the Bearcats went into the break ahead 35-22 after Emily Fenton made a pair of freebies in the closing seconds.

Sedlock opened the scoring 1:25 into the second half, and it opened the floodgates for the Bearcats, as they began the frame by scoring 17 unanswered points.  A Melissa Mansur bucket at the 17:11 mark gave SVC its first 20-point lead of the night, 43-22, and two minutes later, a conventional three-point play by Sedlock pushed SVC's advantage to 46-22.  Another three-point play, this one from Rocco, made the score 49-22, before a fast break lay up from Caty Kumar with 10:36 left in regulation capped off the long run, and put the hosts in front 52-22.

The Bearcats forced nine Allegheny turnovers over the lengthy 10-minute run, while holding the Gators to an 0-for-10 mark from the field, leaving little doubt to the game's outcome as Saint Vincent would cruise down the stretch.

For the game, Saint Vincent forced 31 Allegheny turnovers, as five Bearcats tallied at least two steals, led by five from Sedlock.

Allegheny (3-2) was led on the scoresheet by Heidi Goeller, who scored 12 points.

The Bearcats (4-0) will now have a week-long layoff before returning to action next Saturday afternoon, opening up the Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule with a 1pm game at Thiel College.
