GETTYSBURG, Pa.— Led by three players in double figures and some clutch free-throw shooting in the final minute of play, the Swarthmore College men's basketball team (2-6, 2-3 CC) outlasted homestanding Gettysburg by a score of 70-63 on Saturday afternoon from Bream Gym.

The win marks the Garnet's first win at Gettysburg since 2004 and the first time the team has won back-to-back games since the start of the 2010-11 season.

Junior Jay Kober led all scorers with 21 points, senior Will Gates recorded his 11th career double-double with 18 points and a team-high 11 rebounds and junior Jordan Federer added 11 points.

Despite leading for much of the afternoon, the Garnet left the door open late, and Bullets took advantage. Gettysburg (2-6, 1-4) barreled back from 19-points down, cutting the lead to one point with under a minute to play. With the game on the line and the pressure on, the Garnet rose to the occasion and finished off the Bullets at the foul line. Federer, Gates and Karl Barkley combined to hit eight-of-eight free throws in final minute to seal the seven-point win.

The Garnet won the game on the boards and at the line; Swarthmore finished with a 34-20 rebounding edge and finished 23-of-28 from the charity stripe compared to just 6-of-13 for Gettysburg.

Three early turnovers put the Garnet at an immediate deficit. They were behind the Bullets for much of the first half, but never fell farther than five points away. With just under five minutes to play, Gates knocked down a three-pointer putting the Garnet up 22-21, a lead it would not relinquish for the rest of the afternoon.

Despite committing 10 more turnovers than the Bullets, the Garnet managed to maintain a lead throughout, and expand on a 32-21 halftime lead. At the midway point of the second half, Kober hit a triple that put the Garnet up 19 points, 54-35.

However, in the spirit of Gettysburg's Civil War heritage, it made a late charge. Ignited by a fast break 3-pointer by sophomore Joe Emerusabe, Gettysburg cut the lead to six points, 62-56. Gettysburg later went on a 10-2 run to come within one point in the final minute, but ultimately fell short.

Federer also grabbed six rebounds and added two assists.

Gettysburg's sophomore Sean Gordan and senior Christian Bors each scored 12 points for the Bullets.

After a strong pair of conference wins, the Garnet take a break from Centennial play but return home to face Delaware Valley on Wednesday, December 12th. Play is set for 7:00.
