Saturday men's wrap: Cabrini, WPI survive

Without Aaron Walton-Moss, No. 2 Cabrini had to rally from a 10-point second-half deficit to defeat Rosemont 75-74.

Walton-Moss, who had a triple-double on Thursday night against Gwynedd Mercy, and in the first Cabrini-Rosemont game, injured his ankle on Thursday.

Vinny Walls stepped up for the Cavaliers, with 14 points and four assists. Jon Miller, who had 11 points and three blocked shots, hit two free throws with two seconds left to put Cabrini up by hour before Rosemont hit a 3-pointer to make the final margin one point. Walton-Moss' status for Monday's Top 10 showdown with Wesley is unknown.

WPI point guard Aaron Davis slipped and nearly turned it over in the final minute of a nail-biter vs. Springfield, but he sprung back up, got the ball back and went glass on a reverse layup for the winning basket with 53.3 seconds remaining.

The host Engineers (18-1, 8-0 NEWMAC) led all of 3:37 the entire game, but rallied back from as far down as 10 for a 71-70 win at Harrington Auditorium. It's WPI's 15th consecutive win.

Fresh off a win vs. SUNY-Purchase and poised to move up in the Top 25, No. 16 Albertus Magnus got tripped up in Maine, falling to St. Joseph's 74-55. The Monks roared out to a 27-9 lead and never looked back, led by Matt Medeiros, who put up 24 points and seven assists in the win. It's the first D-III loss for Albertus.

Two of the ranked NCAC teams lost to teams from the lower portion of the league. Denison connected on three 3-pointers over the final 2:09 to upset No. 18 Wittenberg 63-60 on the road, while Emmanuel Lewis made an acrobatic layup with 11 seconds left to play to lift homestanding Oberlin past No. 23 DePauw 62-60.

No. 5 Wooster bounced back from a 57-54 deficit with 11 unanswered points, a run that proved to be the difference in the Fighting Scots' 75-68 win against Wabash. Trevor Hass and Joe Ritchay scored 17 points apiece to keep top-ranked UW-Stevens Point undefeated in a 63-46 win vs. UW-Superior.

Geneseo State took No. 20 Brockport to overtime but it wasn't enough as the Golden Eagles escaped with a 73-68 win. The Blue Knights held John Ivy to 13 points, on 1-for-14 shooting. He scored seven points in the extra session, however, all from the free throw line.

Albright didn't trail the entire regulation, but Messiah took the lead when it had to, defeating the Lions 90-87 in double overtime. The Lions tied the ball up with three seconds left in the second extra period, trailing 88-87, and had a chance to inbounds for the winning play. Albright committed a five-second violation however, and the No. 22 Falcons escaped after Zac Hoy hit two free throws at the other end.

Zach Lambert drained a go-ahead 3-pointer with just under 10 seconds remaining to lift Trinity (Texas) to a 52-48 victory over Colorado College. With his team down 50-48, Ryan Milne nearly put CC back in front, but his long-range jumper rattled out and Trinity added a pair of free throws to close out the scoring.

Scranton picked up another road conference win, defeating Juniata 63-54 behind 22 points from Ross Danzig. The Royals are 4-0 in Landmark road games, but 2-2 at home. Hood continued its winning ways, picking up its seventh consecutive win, beating Arcadia 93-88 in overtime. The Blazers were 15-for-30 from 3-point range. 

Joe Loughran posted his 200th career victory in style as Rutgers-Newark upended Richard Stockton 73-63 to stay alone atop of the NJAC standings.
