Outside Shooting Leads Hood to Seventh Straight Win

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Hood College men's basketball team hit 15 3-point field goals and need each of them to outlast Arcadia 93-88 in overtime in Commonwealth Conference action.

The Blazers hit 15-of-30 from long range in the game, the most threes in a game for the team in seven years and just one short of the school record. 

Hood (15-4, 9-3) extended its win streak seven games, the second longest in school history. Its 15 wins are tied for the third best single season total for the program.

Cameron Cook (Baltimore, Md. / Calvert Hall) and Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) combined for 44 points in the game.

Cook, the active Division III leader in 3-point field goals made, sank 6-of-12 threes and was 8-of-17 overall from the field on his way to 21 points. He led Hood with seven rebounds.

Hill scored a career-high 21 points on 4-of-8 from the floor and 11-of-12 from the free throw line. The reserve guard dished out five assists and led the team with three steals.

The score was tied at 80-80 in overtime before Cook sank his final three with 3:08 to go to put Hood on top for good.

Arcadia later pulled within two on a Rashon Brock field goal, but Hill nailed one of his two 3-pointers of the day with 1:28 to go for an 88-83 advantage. The Knights' Alex Cohen and Hill traded pairs of free throws before John Landro nailed a three to make it 90-88 with 11 seconds left. Hill was fouled and made 1-of-2, but Arcadia turned the ball over after clearing the rebound. Hill came up with the steal and sank his final two free throws to seal the victory.

The Blazers led 77-69 in the second half after two free throws by Matt Galloway(Sterling, Va. / Potomac Falls) with 2:22 left, but the Knights fought back to send the game to overtime. Brock and Cohen converted field goals to make the score 77-73 with a minute to go. After a block by Brock, Justin Trojanowski scored with 28 seconds on the clock to cut Hood's lead to two. Arcadia was forced to foul and a foul shot by Trevor Magnuski (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) extended the Blazers' lead back to three with 14 seconds left.

The Knights held for the final shot and Mike Fitzpatrick found Torrell Candelaria on the right side for a game-tying three with four seconds on the clock.

Hood had opened the game with a 9-2 run and held a 42-36 lead at the half. Arcadia took the lead in the second half after four straight points by Landro. The Blazers still trailed 56-53 before Hill's first three tied the score with 10:56 left in the second half. Cook and Landro traded 3-point field goals, but another three by Cook made it 62-59 with 8:06 on the clock and Hood led until Candelaria sent the game to overtime.

In addition to big games from Cameron Cook and Hill, Chris Cook (Mechanicsburg, Va. / Lee-Davis) and Galloway also reached double figures. Chris Cook hit 7-of-16 field goals, went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and dished out six assists. Galloway hit 4-of-7 field goald and finished with 13 points.

Landro scored a game-high 24 points off the bench for Arcadia, hitting 7-of-13 field goals, including five threes. Joe Brown added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Brock netted 12 points and Candelaria scored 10. 

Hood took excellent care of the ball in the contest, committing just 12 turnovers and dishing out 21 assists on 30 field goals.

Arcadia's bench accounted for 46 of the team's 88 points.

The Blazers remain tied for second in the Commonwealth Conference. First-place Messiah defeated Albright to remain a game ahead of Hood and Alvernia, who beat Stevenson on Saturday. The Mustangs fell a game behind the Blazers and Crusaders and now sit in fourth place.

Hood returns to BB&T Arena to host Lebanon Valley on February 5 at 8 p.m.
