Saturday wrap: DePauw, Cassidy notch big wins

DePauw lost to its archrival on the football field, but the Tigers picked up a big win on the basketball court. They defeated No. 6 North Central (Ill.) 77-64 in the final of the Chicago Marriott Naperville Tip-Off Tournament.

DePauw pulled away from North Central (Ill.) with torrid second half shooting. The Tigers shot 64 percent from the field (14-for-22) and made seven of nine three-point attempts. They also hit 13 of 14 free throws in the second half. Michael Wilkison led the way with 24 points and the Tigers held Preseason All-American Landon Gamble to four points in limited minutes because of foul trouble.

Rowan head coach Joe Cassidy picked up win No. 300 as the Profs pounded Berkeley (N.J.) 89-60. Cassidy's career record is 300-148 in a little more than 17 seasons.

No. 5 Wheaton (Ill.) fended off Wittenberg 73-62 in overtime. Tyler Peters had a triple-double for the Thunder with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Scranton missed three of four free throw attempts in the final 21 seconds, but held on to beat No. 16 Randolph-Macon 78-76. Ross Danzig had 23 points for the Royals.

No. 1 Amherst opened its title defense with a 96-78 win at Brooklyn. Alvernia's Harrison Deyo made a layup with 10 seconds left to help the Crusaders reach overtime against Franklin and Marshall where Alvernia beat the Diplomats 70-69.

On the women's side, Olivet defeated Muskingum 81-66 as Comets' center Stefanie Lang finished a monster weekend. She scored 28 points and grabbed 27 rebounds against the Muskies after posting 43 points and 15 rebounds on Friday against Kenyon.

No. 10 Tufts capped a nice weekend in Upstate New York by beating homestanding Rochester 61-57. Rochester forwards Danielle McNabb and Loren Wagner combined for 37 points and 21 rebounds but the Yellowjacket reserves only scored one point.
