Olivet women’s basketball defeats Muskingum, 81-66, in champ game of MSJ Tip-Off Tourney

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Junior Stefanie Lang (Valparaiso, Ind.) posted her second straight double-double, 28 points and 27 rebounds, to lead the Olivet College women's basketball team an 81-66 win over Muskingum (Ohio) University today in the championship game of the College of Mount St. Joseph Tip-Off Tournament in Cincinnati. Senior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) chipped in with a career-best 20 points, while senior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) contributed 16 assists. For her efforts, Lang was selected as the tournament Most Valuable Player, and Campbell joined her on the all-tournament team.

The Comets raced out to a 13-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game and never looked back. Their biggest lead of the first half was 17 points, 39-22, with 32 seconds left before the break. The Fighting Muskies scored a basket to trail 39-24 at halftime. Olivet stretched its lead to 18 points on two occasions early in the second half. Muskingum got as close as six points with 9:08 remaining in the game.

Olivet made 34-of-76 baskets (44.7 percent) and out-rebounded the Muskies, 56-37. Lang drained 13-of-18 field goals and two free throws for her 28 points. Twenty of her 27 rebounds were off the defensive glass. Ciba made 8-of-19 baskets and four free throws for her 20 points. Junior Carli Reid (Lansing/Waverly) joined them in double figures with 11 points. Campbell had seven points to go along with her 16 assists. Senior Heather Lauwers (Ortonville/Brandon) contributed five points and eight rebounds.

Tori Jarrett led Muskingum with 23 points. Jasmine Goings registered 13 points and team-high eight rebounds off the bench.

Olivet (2-0) is now idle until Tuesday, Nov. 26, when it opens Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play at home against defending co-champion Hope College at 8 p.m.
