Wednesday wrap: Races to the top

Wednesday night's scoreboard is filled with results that will shape the upcoming conference playoffs.

No. 14 St. Mary's (Md.) defeated No. 24 Wesley 73-63 in a battle for CAC supremacy. The Seahawks' backcourt outscored the Wolverines' guards 49-14 with Devin Spencer dropping 25 points in 36 minutes. The Seahawks and Wolverines split the regular season series, but St. Mary's has a one-game lead with four to play. Box Score

In the CCIW, there are five teams fighting for four slots. No. 7 North Central (Ill.) beat Carthage 60-52 and No. 20 Wheaton (Ill.) took care of business against North Park, 82-70. No. 12 Illinois Wesleyan won at Augustana 71-65 to remain unbeaten in conference and Millikin lost at Elmhurst 68-61.

Wednesday's results leave Augustana and Carthage tied for the final playoff spot with Wheaton and North Central one game ahead. Illinois Wesleyan remains above the fray at 17-3, 9-0.

Albright beat Alvernia 57-54 in the showdown of Reading, Pennsylvania rivals. The Lions and Crusaders are now tied for first in the MAC Commonwealth.  Delaware Valley knocked off DeSales 74-71 in the MAC Freedom Conference. The Aggies' win nearly cements their playoff birth for a team that has made the conference postseason just a handful of times in program history.

Though there was never much doubt that No. 2 St. Thomas would make the MIAC playoffs, the Tommies made it official with a 74-52 win over Carleton. UW-Platteville ended UW-Stevens Point's bid for a perfect WIAC season. The Pioneers defeated the fifth-ranked pointers 54-46.

Four teams entered the night tied for first in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Penn State-Behrend beat Medaille 64-55 and La Roche shot past Mount Aloysius 94-78, so the Lions and Red Hawks stay in a first place tie.

New Jersey City is making a push in the NJAC. The Gothic Knights have bounced back from an 0-7 start to the NJAC schedule and are now in position for a playoff spot after a 60-50 win against Richard Stockton.

Baldwin Wallace won't participate in the OAC playoffs, but the Yellow Jackets can still shape the post-season picture. They knocked off No. 19 Mount Union 74-71 to drop the Purple Raiders into a second-place tie with Otterbein, which got rolled by No. 6 Ohio Northern 65-42. Baldwin Wallace iced the victory by making its final six free throws. Box score

Montclair State became the first team to clinch a regular season conference title as the Red Hawks topped Ramapo 79-56. Montclair earned the top-seed in the NJAC playoffs and a first round bye.

No. 23 Moravian dropped Drew 66-50 to wrap up a bid to the Landmark Conference playoffs. No. 13 Catholic edged Juniata 77-74 to stay one game back of the Greyhounds in the race for first place.

Marymount pushed York (Pa.) another step back in the CAC chase. The Saints held the Spartans to 15 first-half points en route to a 53-44 victory. Marymount meets Mary Washington with first place on the line on Saturday. The Eagles cruised past Salisbury 55-39.

Olivet guard Kelsey Campbell dished out 16 assists in the Comets' 79-66 win over Alma.
