St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior guard Devin Spencer (Baltimore, Md./Towson Catholic) notched a game-best 25 points as the No. 14 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team avenged their only Capital Athletic Conference loss of the season Wednesday night. The Seahawks (19-2, 7-1 CAC) split the season series with No. 24 Wesley College with a 74-63 victory tonight.
Tonight's victory puts St. Mary's atop of the conference standings while Wesley (16-5, 6-2 CAC) drops to second and sees its 11-game win streak come to an end.
Spencer matched his season-best with six three-pointers in the game while junior guards Donn Hill (Aberdeen, Md./Bel Air) and Brendan McFall (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) added 18 and 11 points, respectively. McFall and senior forward Jeff Haus (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) each pulled down a game-high eight boards.
Back-to-back two-point buckets gave Wesley an early 4-2 lead at 18:57 but St. Mary's responded with a 21-11 run to stake an eight-point advantage at 9:04. The Wolverines reclaimed the lead at 6:37 as senior forward Paul Reynolds' (Wilmington, Del./Smyrna) capped a 9-0 run. The Seahawks hosted another eight-point advantage, heading into the locker room with a 36-28 margin following a 13-4 end to the half.
Spencer paced all scorers at intermission with 15 points as he was 3-of-5 from downtown while Reynolds and junior guard Sean Hopkins (Georgetown, Del./Sussex Central) led Wesley with eight points apiece. St. Mary's bested the Wolverines in three-point shooting by a 55.6% to 33.3% margin.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 42-30 advantage inside the first two minutes of the second half for their first double-digit lead of the contest. Wesley closed the gap to four on four different occasions but could not get over the hump, despite owning a 26-18 edge in the paint. The Wolverines were 1-for-11 from behind the three-point in the second half.
Reynolds ended the night with 22 points and six boards while junior center David Langan (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) tallied 12 and six rebounds. Hopkins only added two more points to his first-half total.
The Seahawks will look to collect their sixth consecutive win next Wednesday, February 6 when St. Mary's welcomes Frostburg State University to the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for another league tilt. Tip-off is at 8:00 pm.
