Capital, F&M surge to 4-0

Hilary Kuhns and Capital are 4-0 after Saturday's win.

The Capital and DePauw women and Franklin and Marshall men picked up big wins against ranked opponents on Saturday afternoon.

Capital topped No. 18 Thomas More 65-59 for its second win over a ranked foe in eight days. The Crusaders grabbed a 25-4 first half lead that the Saints eventually whittled down to three with under three minutes to play. Hilary Kuhns made two free throws and Cookie Geroski added a three-pointer to give Capital control for good. The Crusaders are 4-0 with wins over the Saints and No. 19 Hope. Katie Kitchen scored 25 in the loss giving her 64 in two games.

Katie Aldrich scored 21 points and Savannah Trees hit a trio of three-pointers in a key second half stretch as No. 10 DePauw defeated No. 17 Illinois Wesleyan 67-64 at Washington U. DePauw struggled through a cold start, mustering just four points in the game’s first seven minutes. But the Tigers clawed back and trailed the Titans 34-32 at the break. With the game tied at 38 early in the second half, the Tigers clamped down on the Titans and Savannah Trees hit three shots from behind the arc in four-plus minutes. DePauw built a double-digit lead and held Illinois Wesleyan at arm’s length the rest of the way. Katie Aldrich finished with 21 points and nine rebounds for DePauw, which plays No. 7 Washington U. tomorrow. Olivia Lett led the Titans with 18 points.

Juniata is 5-0 after its 76-63 win at No. 24 St. Vincent. Ashton Bankos hit a three-pointer to give the Eagles the lead for good and finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds and four steals. The Bearcats elimated Texas-Dallas upended No. 23 Howard Payne 74-70 in the ASC conference opener for both teams.

George Fox used a 38-12 lead to run past Chapman 74-57. Hannah Munger had 24 points and 13 rebounds. April Smith had 26 points and 14 boards in William Paterson's win over Baruch, 91-82.

Georgio Milligan and F&M can smile about their good start to the new season.

Men's basketball

No. 17 Franklin and Marshall defeated No. 15 St. Mary's (Md.) for the seventh time in eight tries, this time by a score of 77-68. The Diplomats never trailed and turned 36 Seahawk turnovers into 30 points. Georgio Milligan led Franklin and Marshall with 26 points and Hayk Gyokchyan added 22 more. Franklin and Marshall improves to 4-0.

No. 14 Cabrini rode a big performance off the bench by Jeremy Knowles past Widener, 94-87. The Widener starters scored 78 points but the Pride had no answer for Knowles who scored 24 points on 10-for-18 shooting. Overall the Cavaliers' bench outscored the Widener reserves 38 to nine.

Puget Sound made three free throws in the game's final minute and held No. 21 UW-River Falls scoreless to beat the Falcons 67-64. Puget Sound is 5-0 while conference mate No. 12 Whitworth is also undefeated after taking care of Chapman 58-44 in a rematch of last year's NCAA tournament match-up.

Outside the Top 25, Randolph-Macon tuned up Wednesday's ODAC opener at Virginia Wesleyan by beating Trinity (Texas) 55-40. Andre Simon had 14 points and 14 boards for the Yellow Jackets. Finlandia picked up its first win of the season by surprising UW-Platteville 66-65. Brett Stangel's free throws with 15 seconds left were the difference.
