Mitchell's Santos Scores Career-High 40 Including 1,000th Career Point in Win Over Norwich

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, R.I.) had a career-high 40 points and became the the fifth player in team history to score 1,000 career points leading the Mitchell College women's basketball team to a 77-67 win over Norwich to celebrate Senior Day in the final game of the regular season in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Santos scored 20 points in each half and was 18 of 22 from the foul line while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds in the win. She scored her 1,000th point on a free throw with 2:50 left putting Mitchell up 69-59.

Mitchell ends the regular season 6-16 overall and 4-10 in the GNAC while the Cadets finish 8-16 overall and 2-12 in the conference. 

Jamya Beddoe (New London Conn.) added 16 points while Alexia Watson (Stamford, Conn.) was also in double figures for the Mariners as she finished with 14 points in the win. 

The Mariners shot 42.9 percent (24 of 56) in the win while connecting on six of 17 from 3-point range. Norwich was 25 of 57 (43.9 percent) and just one of 13 from behind the arc.

Mitchell would score the first six points of the game and never trailed in the opening quarter and led 19-11 after the first.

Norwich used an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 21-19 with 7:08 left in the first half.

The Mariners would score nine straight and close the half on with a 21-3 run for a commanding 42-22 lead at the break.

Mitchell led 60-41 after three quarters. Norwich would score the first eight of the fourth quarter cutting the deficit to 60-49 with 6:30 left. The Cadets would get as close as six at 73-67 with 43 seconds left before Santos went four-for-four from the foul line in the final 39 seconds.

The four seniors Santos, Watson, Lyliana Daly (Englewood, N.J.) and Jermia Dumas (Stratford, Conn.) were all honored in a pregame Senior Day ceremony.
