York (Pa.) Cruises Past Hood in Regular Season Finale

FREDERICK, MD – The York College women's basketball squad put together a strong effort as they ended their 2023-24 regular season with a 74-47 win at Hood on Saturday.
The Spartans earned their 15th win of the year after being picked sixth in the MAC Commonwealth preseason coaches poll. The Spartans head into the post season as the third seed in next week's MAC Commonwealth tournament.
The Spartans improve to 15-10 overall and 8-6 in the conference. Hood sees their campaign come to a close with a record of 4-21 and 3-11 in the league.
 
How It Happened
• The Spartans got off to a quick start as they sprinted out to a 16-4 lead over the first five minutes of the game. York led 7-0 before the Blazers got on the board. The Spartans went 6-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-4 from three during the opening spurt. Taylor Burda and Alyssa Hocker each led the way for York with four points each during the spurt. The Spartan lead grew to 14 on a Burda triple with 4:00 minutes left in the period. Na'Vaye Quarles hit two threes to trim the Spartan lead to 21-11 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. The two teams would each score seven points over the next 2:19 as the Spartans took a 26-15 lead after ten minutes of play.
• The Blazers used the second quarter to work their way back into the game as they outscored the Spartans 9-5 over the first five minutes of the quarter, cutting York's lead to 31-24. Burda drilled a three to start a 9-3 run that closed out the half and gave York a 40-27 lead at the break.
• After the Blazers got a Chanelle Lee jumper to start the third quarter, York ripped off a 23-6 run to push the lead to 63-35 with 2:18 left in the quarter. Burda had eight points in the quarter as York was 8-for-11 from the floor and 2-for-3 from three and 5-for-6 from the line. York finished the quarter outscoring the Blazers 25-10 as they led 65-37 after 30 minutes of play. York shot 69.2% from the field in the third quarter while they held the Blazers to just 26.7% from the floor.
• The fourth quarter was low scoring as York pushed the lead to a game-high 32 before settling for the 27-point win.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 44.8% from the floor including 8-for-22 (36.4%) from three and 77.8% (14-for-18) from the free throw line … Hood shot 23.2% (13-for-56) from the field including 5-for-24 (20.8%) from three and 76.2% (16-for-21) from the stripe … York held a 46-34 margin on the glass as the Spartans had ten offensive rebounds which led to seven second chance points … the Spartans forced 19 Blazer turnovers which York turned into 23 points … York's 17 turnovers only cost them six points for Hood … the Spartans dished out 17 assists for the game … York's bench bunch outscored their counterparts 19-3 for the game … the Green and White had a season-high 30 fast break points in the win while York also had 13 steals.

The Spartans are now 16-2 all-time against Hood as the Green and White has won nine straight in the series … the 27-point win was York's second highest margin of victory for the season (28 vs. Juniata and 28 vs. Penn Tech) … York is now 11-1 when out-rebounding their opponent … Hood's 23.2% shooting from the floor was the lowest shooting percentage of the year by a Spartan opponent … York's 17 assists were the most since they had 19 at Penn State Altoona … Taylor Burda led the way for York with 18 points as she was 5-for-10 from three and 3-for-4 from the line … Burda also had a pair of steals and one blocked shot … Alyssa Hocker notched her 11th double-double of the year as she tallied 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds … Hocker was 4-for-4 from the floor and 3-for-4 at the line … she also had three assists and a steal in her 24 minutes of action … Georgia Panopoulos was very efficient as she notched ten points, a rebound, two assists and a steal in just 19 minutes of work as she made her first start of the year … Breana Grim added nine points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals in the win … freshman Mackenzie Brezovec pulled in a career-high nine rebounds in a career-high 17 minutes of action.
