Brown Drains Seven Threes for Keuka College Against Elmira

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — Keuka College senior Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) hit seven threes on her way to a career-high 27 points, but the Wolves would fall 71-59 to Elmira College in women's basketball on Friday night.

Brown also recorded a career-high nine rebounds to lead Keuka College (1-22, 0-15 Empire 8). Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) added 13 points for the Wolves and Meghan Ellis (Cobleskill, N.Y. / Cobleskill-Richmondville) finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Elmira College 71 at Keuka College 59

Elmira College came out fast, jumping out to a 7-0 lead and forcing Keuka College into a timeout. The break paid off for the Wolves. Sydney Brown knocked down a three to get Keuka on the board and sparked a 7-0 run for the Green and Gold to tie the game. The Soaring Eagles regained the lead and carried it through the quarter as they led 16-12 after one.

Mary Cotter got hot from three, making back-to-back shots in the opening minutes, to cut into the deficit, making it a one-point game. The lead traded hands as Meghan Ellis made a jumper to give the Wolves a 26-25 advantage, but Elmira answered right back with a three. A personal 7-0 run by Sydney Brown tied the game and pushed the Keuka lead to 34-28. Maddie Kramer (Ringtown, Pa. / Nativity BVM) capped the scoring in the first half. The Wolves held Elmira without a point over the final four and a half minutes and took a 10-0 run into halftime. Keuka led 36-28 at the break.

Elmira quickly got back in the game early in the second half as an intentional foul was called against the Wolves. The Soaring Eagles made both free throws and got the ball, eventually hitting a three for five points during the possession. Mary Cotter and Sydney Brown answered right back with threes of their own, but Elmira went on an 11-0 run to take the lead. The Soaring Eagles led late until Sydney Brown hit a three in the final minute to send the game to the fourth quarter tied 50-50.

The Soaring Eagles took the lead early in the fourth on threes. The Wolves answered with free throws to keep it close, but nine straight for Elmira midway through the quarter put the game away. Elmira would lead by double-digits until the end as they defeated Keuka College 71-59 on Friday.

  • The seven threes by Sydney Brown tied for the third-most in a game in program history and the most since Reighly Melochick hit nine against Morrisville State in the 2018 North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament
  • Seven threes tied Brown for the season-high in the Empire 8 Conference. Her seven was matched by Laura Bogota from Elmira College on Friday night. Brown leads the conference with 60 threes made this year
  • Brown now has 143 threes in her career, the third-most in program history. She also broke a tie for third on the single-season list with 60 this year
  • Caiden Crego (Lyons, N.Y. / Lyons) made the right decision with the ball on Friday, assisting on seven Keuka College baskets, setting a new career-high
  • The Wolves were +8 on the glass, but Elmia led Keuka in second-chance points 13-11

Up Next for Keuka College: The Green and Gold has one final game left on their 2023-24 schedule. Keuka College will host Alfred University at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Before the game will be the annual senior day celebration where Keuka College will honor the Class of 2024.
