Berry Knocks Down Rhodes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Berry Women's Basketball (13-8 overall, 7-3 SAA) pulled out a thrilling 50-49 triumph at Rhodes (12-8 overall, 7-3 SAA) on Friday night. The win lifted the Vikings into a third-place tie with the Lynx.

Karlee Armstrong had an outstanding night with 13-points, a new career high.

In a defensive battle, both teams found it difficult to find the goal tonight. The low scoring first quarter consisted of a 6-1 Lynx lead, four minutes in. Kenadie Lee's back-to-back layups brought the game within one possession. Tying at 11 with a free throw from Armstrong right a minute Berry looked to take a lead, but the last bucket came from foul shots from Rhodes heading to the second 13-11.

The second quarter played no differently with eight of the Vikings 13 points coming from the free-throw line. No basket went unanswered by Rhodes and the home team held the advantage at the half, 29-26.

After wearing and tearing on the Lynx for the first half, the Vikings made sure to stay within an arm's length to finally make their move in the third. Halfway through the third, Ellie Gearing tied the game at 33 and Jeryn Jarret gained the first lead for Berry since the first quarter at 35-33.

The Lynx quickly answered and took back their lead, but at the end of quarter leading scorer, Armstrong had a huge and one opportunity and again tied the game at 38 as the teams looked to battle in the final ten minutes.

The Vikings, taking charges in the second half of the game, turned the momentum and limited the Lynx offensive efforts.

Throughout the fourth, there were four ties and only two changes of the lead. The Lynx took the first lead, but once Berry captured it back there was no turning around, they were coming home with the win.

At 50-46, Callihan gave Berry their first two possession of the night with just a minute to go. A tough foul by the Vikings gave their foe a three-point opportunity and the score stood at 50-49 under a minute.

Coach Thomas Johnson used his timeout to advance the ball and drew up a four low set with an isolation to run off some clock before Lee drove and was unable to connect. The Lynx secured the rebound with 11 seconds remaining.

A drive and missed layup wound up in the hands of the home team as they took a quick shot that sunk, but a travel call was first. With the shot being no good only 0.8 seconds stood between the Vikings and a win over the Lynx. A throw in to secure the ball boosted Berry to a big road win (50-49).

The Vikings will be back in action on Sunday at Hendrix, game time set for 1:00 PM ET.
