Women’s Basketball Celebrates Senior Day in Historic Fashion

Oberlin, Ohio - For the first time in program history, the Oberlin College women's basketball team has beaten the DePauw University Tigers as the Yeowomen earned a hard-fought, 55-50, victory over the longtime national powerhouse Saturday afternoon to cap off the Senior Day celebration.

The triumph snapped an 0-27 all-time record against the Tigers coming into the contest and marked the Yeowomen's fourth consecutive win as they moved to 16-7 overall and 7-5 in the NCAC. The win gives Oberlin a chance to host a potential NCAC Tournament game with two regular season games still ahead against Wittenberg and Denison.

Prior to tip-off, the program honored seniors Alyson Jefferson and Gina Lombard. Together, they have orchestrated the most successful three-year run in program history, helping the team produce 54 total wins. Jefferson had 15 points and six rebounds in the game, while Lombard came away with four rebounds and two points.

It was junior Camille Zinaich who led all scorers with 16 points to go along with team-highs in rebounds (8) and assists (3).

In a game that featured 12 lead changes and eight ties, it was fitting that it would come down to the final seconds. Four clutch free throws from Jefferson had the count level at 48-48 with just under two minutes to go. After the Tigers went back out in front on a Diana Burgher bucket, it was Jefferson who slashed her way through the lane and took some contact on her way up to the rim. The Washington, D.C., native would finish off the old-fashioned 3-point play to give Oberlin a 51-50 edge.

After getting a critical stop on defense, Zinaich would calmly step to the line and cash in both freebies but the Tigers still had hope with the chance of a potential game-tying three. After Ava Hassel's first attempt was off the mark, the Tigers were able to secure the offensive rebound to force Oberlin into one more stop. Following another timeout, Tori Allen would step out of bounds with under two seconds to play to allow the Yeowomen to hang on for the historic victory.

DePauw led 19-11 early in the second quarter, but the Yeowomen would hold the Tigers to just three points over the final 8:19 of the opening half as they worked their way all the way back to within one, trailing 22-21 at the break. The 10-3 spurt featured six points from Zinaich.

No more than four points would separate the two foes throughout the entirety of the second half but Oberlin would never lead at any point over the final 20 minutes until Jefferson's layup and free throw with just 35 ticks left to play.

The Yeowomen shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the floor and made only two of 17 triple-tries, but they would make up for it by going a perfect 13-of-13 at the charity stripe.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 17-7 overall and to second place in the NCAC at 10-3.

Oberlin will be back in action at home on Wednesday night as the Tigers of Wittenberg invade Philips Gym for a key conference clash. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
