History Made in Ainsworth as #17 Smith Topples Clark

NORTHAMPTON - It was a historic day inside Ainsworth Gymnasium Saturday afternoon as records fell in #17 Smith's 104-64 victory over Clark University in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. Head coach Lynn Hersey got her 300th career win, while Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, CA/Fairmont Prep Academy)broke the all-time record for career three-pointers and scored her 1,000th career point. 

Smith sees its record improve to 17-3 on the season and 5-1 in conference play while Clark falls to 14-7 overall and 4-3 in NEWMAC action. 

Game Notes

  • Hersey, who is Smith basketball's all-time leader in coaching victories, has completed seven 20-win seasons and has guided the Pioneers to the NCAA Tournament five times during her tenure
  • Yamada, who now has 203 career 3-pointers, passes Lauren Bondi's  previous record of 201 set in 2019. She also becomes the 17th member of the 1,000 point club at Smith
  • Smith's 19 three-pointers is second all-time just trailing the 20 made against SUNY Morrisville in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament last year
  • Smith's 104 points are the third most in program history 

Inside the Numbers

  • Yamada established a new career-high with 30 points and tied her career-high with eight three-pointers
  • Amelia Clairmont (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) added 18 off the bench, including 5-for-8 shooting from long distance 
  • Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists to go with seven rebounds, while Sofia Rosa(Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) finished with 13 points and eight boards
  • Smith ended the night with advantages in rebounding, (38-24), second-chance points (10-7), points in the paint (32-24), and bench scoring (36-30).
  • The Pioneers shot 59.3% (35-of-59) from the field, 61.3% (19-of-31) from three-point range, and 68.2% (15-of-22) from the free throw line
  • Clark shot 36.2% (21-of-58) from the floor, 33.3% (6-of-18) from long distance, and 72.7% (16-of-22) from the free throw line

Game Highlights

  • Tied at 3, Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) and Yamada scored back-to-back threes and a fastbreak layup by Rosa forced a timeout by Clark with Smith up 11-3. The home team closed out the quarter on a 13-5 spurt to make it 24-8 going into the second
  • Selam Maher (Hopkins, MN/St. Louis Park) and Clairmont put Smith up 22 with threes, but Clark chipped away and made it a 17-point game at the half, 42-25
  • Smith scorched the Cougars for a 41-point third quarter where the Pioneers shot 73.7% from the field and went 8-of-10 from beyond-the-arc. Yamada scored 22 points in the period as Smith went on a 34-6 run to stretch its lead to 50 points
  • The Pioneers continued its impressive shooting in the fourth as Clairmont scored 12 of Smith's 21 points
