Brewers Roll To 18th Straight Victory

Poughkeepsie, NY – 13 different players scored, including four in double-figures, as the #RV/24 Vassar College Women's Basketball team produced its 18th straight victory with a convincing 77-35 home triumph over Bard Friday evening. Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) led all players with 12 points and sophomore Sam Lederman (East Brunswick, NJ) netted a career-high 10 points.

 

Vassar improves to 19-1 overall on the season and to 13-0 in Liberty League play, while Bard falls to 4-15 overall and 0-13 in conference competition.

 

First Half

  • Vassar broke the game open early, scoring the first 11 points of the contest.
  • Harvey bookended the run with buckets with Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) adding five points, including a three-pointer.
  • Vassar did not allow a field goal until the 2:34 mark of the first quarter and used a pair of three-pointers from Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) and a triple from Tash Thompson (Los Altos Hills, CA) to carry a 20-5 lead into the second period.
  • Vassar started the second stanza with another sustained run, scoring the first nine points to open a 29-5 lead.
  • Mo Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) opened the second half scoring and a bucket from Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) capped off the spurt 3:20 into the frame.
  • McDermed connected on another three-pointer with 2:23 left before halftime to give the Brewers a 34-11 lead and a Margo Gramiak (Wilmington, DE) bucket in the final half minute sent Vassar to the intermission with a commanding 36-13 advantage.
  • Vassar closed the opening 20 minutes shooting 40.5-percent and went 6-for-14 from behind the arc.
  • Bard was held to a 6-for-29 effort from the floor and misfired on each of its nine three-point attempts.

 

Second Half

  • Naiya Kurnik (Fallbrook, CA) opened the second half scoring with a three-point play to push the advantage to 39-13.
  • The lead reached 30 points for the first time when a Harvey bucket in transition moved the Brewers in front 45-15.
  • A Lederman three-pointer on the fast break surged the lead to 51-20 with 3:32 left in the third frame.
  • Lederman connected on another triple with 1:26 left in the period to give Vassar a 54-20 lead.
  • Regan hit another layup to finish off the third period scoring and gave the Brewers their largest lead to that point at 57-22.
  • Harvey hit a three-pointer early in the fourth frame to move the advantage to 60-24 with 9:09 left to play.
  • A Kolby Davis (Houston, TX) three-pointer with 5:58 left in the contest moved the advantage to 40 points for the first time, sending the Brewers to a 68-27 lead.
  • The lead grew to a game-high 42 points three times in the final 4:38.
  • Ashley Mostrom (Germantown, MD) drilled a three-pointer to move the score to 71-29, Ava Gurley (Austin, TX) converted a layup to make the advantage 75-33 and Lederman connected on a pair of free-throws to give the Brewers the final 77-35 decision.
  • Vassar closed the second half shooting 39.5-percent overall and connected on five more three-pointers.
  • Bard improved to 36-percent shooting after halftime and went 2-for-8 from three-point range.

 

For The Brewers

  • Harvey finished the night leading all scorers with 12 points after going 5-for-12 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers. Harvey rounded out the victory with two rebounds and three steals.
  • Lederman reached double-figures for the first time in her career, netting 10 points on 3-for-6 shooting and a 2-for-4 effort from behind the arc.
  • Gleb closed out a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, including seven offensive caroms. Gelb led the team with three assists and added two blocks and three steals.
  • McDermed chipped in 10 points and hauled in five rebounds to go along with three blocked shots.
  • Bella Tawney (Simsbury, CT) scored eight points, collected six rebounds, handed out two assists and blocked a pair of shots.
  • Ahearn connected on two triples and finished with six points and assisted on a pair of buckets.

 

For The Raptors

  • Shirley Dong led Bard with 10 points.
  • Lexi Miller led the team with eight rebounds and added six points.
  • Mae Redmond paced the team with three assists and totaled six points.
  • Erin Tobes swiped a game-high four steals.

Game Statistics

  • Vassar shot an even 40-percent overall in the game and knocked down 11 three-pointers.
  • The Brewers' defense held Bard to 27.8-percnt shooting and a 2-for-17 effort from behind the arc.
  • Vassar assisted on 20 of its 30 made field goals in the game.
  • The Brewers corralled 27 offensive rebounds, leading to 25 second chance points.
  • Vassar scored 17 points in transition.
  • Vassar doubled up Bard in paint points, 32-16.
