THE BASICS:

- Score: MIT 71, WPI 67 (OT)

- Records: MIT (10-5, 2-1 NEWMAC); WPI (8-8, 0-3 NEWMAC)

- Location: Worcester, Mass. (Harrington Auditorium)

- The Lead: A long buzzer-beating jumper by graduate student Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) at the end of regulation coupled with a 14-of-14 performance at the free throw line in overtime helped MIT defeat WPI, 71-67, in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon. Antonakakis finished with a game high 22 points, increasing her career total to 1,386 and putting her seven points behind Sabrina Drammis '16 who ranks second in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- MIT established a 13-6 lead after a layup by Antonakakis with 2:03 left in the opening quarter. WPI replied with a 9-2 run, tying the score at the end of the frame.

- The hosts carried the momentum into the second stanza as it built a 28-17 advantage at the 4:37 mark. MIT ended its scoring drought courtesy of a layup by first year Rachael Zacks (Glencoe, Ill.) during its next possession and then sophomore Alice Hall (Ambler, Pa.) drained her own layup with 3:07 remaining. Both teams recorded layups during next 44 seconds, with Hall's bucket making the score 30-23 entering halftime.

- MIT put together a 6-2 burst to start the third quarter as a free throw by junior Kamsi Nwogu (Algonquin, Ill.) brought it within 32-29 with just under seven minutes on the clock. WPI responded with a jumper during its next trip down the court and maintained a small cushion as a jumper from Antonakakis made the score 36-33 at the 4:41 mark. WPI went on a five-point spurt, however, baskets by juniors Angie Choi (Cypress, Calif.) and Elise Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) during the final 1:12 narrowed the gap to 41-37.

- Layups by Harvey and Nwogu knotted the game at the 7:44 mark of the fourth quarter. A pair of baskets, the second midway through the frame, gave WPI a small cushion which grew to 51-46 with 50 seconds remaining. Antonakakis drained two free throws eight seconds later, and after a jumpball, Choi knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game with 19.6 seconds to go. WPI drained a layup with 4.1 seconds on the clock to go up 53-51.

- After calling a timeout and advancing the ball, WPI deflected MIT's inbounds pass across the court to the visitor's bench. On its second attempt, Antonakakis collected the ball, took a quick dribble to her right, faked her defender, came back to the left, and launched a shot from just inside the arc that hit the rim, glanced off the backboard, hit the rim again, and spun in to force the extra session.

- A jumper from Antonakakis gave MIT a two-point edge 31 seconds into overtime, but two ties would ensue until a three-point play put WPI in front, 60-59, at the 2:19 mark. MIT reclaimed the lead courtesy of two free throws by Choi four seconds later and then two more free throws by senior Grace Harrington (Seattle, Wash.) resulted in a 63-60 margin with 1:36 on the clock. WPI stayed close courtesy of two free throws, however, MIT countered with a put-back by Nwogu with 52 seconds left. Following a WPI turnover, Choi's two free throws increased the lead to 67-62 with 28.2 seconds remaining.

- WPI replied with a three-pointer with 19.3 seconds to go. However, a 2-for-2 performance at the charity stripe by both Antonakakis (13.2 seconds) and Choi (2.1 seconds), despite a layup from WPI with 3.3 seconds left, secured the win for MIT.
