Elkins Notches Double-Double as Randolph-Macon Hoops Falls to #18 WLU

How it Happened

  • In the first period, Washington and Lee took a fast 8-2 lead, ending with a Hanna Malik lay-up with 6:46 left in the period. The Yellow Jackets ended the final six minutes on a 9-0 run to take a 11-8 lead into the second period. Juliana Park led the way with three straight points to end the run. 
  • Randolph-Macon kept the run going to begin the second period. Bella Bruce knocked down a three ball, Marisa Ziegler converted a mid range jumper to cap off the 14-0 run. RMC mounted a 16-8 lead with 8:13 remaining in the first half. WLU rattled off six straight points to pull within two at 16-14. Elkins scored four straight points to end the period, as Randolph-Macon took a 20-18 lead into the halftime break. 
  • The Generals outscored Randolph-Macon 15-4 in the third period, as the RMC offense stumbled as the foul total mounted as well. Cait Velez and Elkins scored the only points of the period for the Yellow Jackets. Malik capped off the period with two free throws, as WLU took a 33-24 lead into the final period. 
  • Randolph-Macon managed to only get within nine twice during the final period. Both teams scored 18 points in the period, but the Generals took a narrow 51-42 victory on the road. Ziegler scored six points in the final ten minutes to lead RMC offensively.   

Inside the Numbers

  • Randolph-Macon shot 22.1% from the floor, as Washington and Lee knocked down 27.3% of their shots.
  • WLU outrebounded the Yellow Jackets 62-to-44. 
  • Elkins recorded her ninth double-double of the season and fifth straight. The sophomore recorded 10 points, 19 rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block.
  • Ziegler led in scoring with 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting. The junior also grabbed two rebounds and had one steal. 
  • Sam Smith scored six points, dished out four assists and had two steals. 
  • Velez recorded six points off the bench for RMC. She also was tremendous on the defensive end with three steals and three blocks.
