WBB: Panthers run past WestConn in end-to-end LEC win

 

PLYMOUTH, N.H. The Plymouth State University women's basketball team defeated the Western Connecticut State University Wolves, 74-56, in a Little East Conference (LEC) clash at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The win gives Plymouth State the season sweep against the Wolves. PSU's last sweep of an LEC team came against Keene State during the 2018-19 season.

Three Panthers recorded double-digit scoring on the afternoon, with junior Bri Wilcox (Londonderry, N.H) leading the way with 19 points. Freshman Ashley Stephens (Pembroke, N.H.) poured in 15 points of her own, while sophomore Hailey Malozzi (Maynard, Mass.) scored 10 points in the winning effort for the Panthers.

Plymouth State improves to 8-8 (4-4 LEC), while the Wolves fall to 5-13 (1-8 LEC).

How it Happened:

  • The Panthers started with the first six points of the contest with 7:25 on the clock in the first quarter.
  • Plymouth State opened the advantage to nine points (21-12) after one quarter of play.
  • Behind an 11-2 run, PSU cruised to a 32-14 lead midway through the second quarter.
  • The Panthers closed out the half with a 20-point advantage, 39-19.
  • Plymouth State continued to keep its foot on the gas as the team led end-to-end and closed out the conference victory to move to an even 4-4 in league play.

By the Numbers:

  • The Panthers went 28-of-57 (49.1%) from the floor and 6-of-18 (33.3%) from three.
  • WestConn edged PSU on the boards, 32-31.
  • Points in the paint went to the Panthers by a margin of 36-16.
  • The Panthers scored 30 points off the bench to their opponent's seven.
  • PSU led for the entirety of the contest.
