Brewers Earn 14th Straight Victory

Schenectady, NY – Sophomore Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) scored a season-high 26 points and Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) supplied 22 points as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team ran its winning streak to 14 games on Friday following a 70-60 road win at league rival Union.

 

Friday's victory improves Vassar's record to 15-1 overall on the season and 9-0 against league rivals, while Union falls to 5-11 overall and 4-5 against conference opponents.

 

First Half

  • Vassar scored nine of the first 11 points of the contest, including seven from Harvey, to push in front 9-2 early in the opening frame.
  • Union would not be able to climb closer than three points in the quarter after the opening run and a Harvey free-throw late in the period gave Vassar a 16-12 lead through 10 minutes.
  • On the strength of 4-for-8 shooting from behind the arc in the second quarter, Vassar outscored Union 21-11 in the stanza.
  • Vassar's lead reached double-figures for the first time on a McDermed three-pointer that pushed the Brewers in front 29-17 with 4:18 left before halftime.
  • Vassar surged in front 37-21 on another McDermed triple with 2:33 left in the second quarter before carrying a 37-23 lead into halftime.
  • Vassar shot 36.8-percent overall in the opening 20 minutes and went 5-for-15 from three-point range.
  • Union was limited to 34.4-peercent shooting in the first half, including a 1-for-7 showing from behind the arc.

 

Second Half

  • Harvey scored five quick points coming out of halftime to move the Brewers in front 42-25 early in the third quarter.
  • The advantage grew to 45-27 on another McDermed triple with 7:33 left in the period before growing to a game-high 19 points, at 57-38, on a pair of Bella Tawney (Simsbury, CT) free-throws with 33 ticks remaining in the third frame.
  • Vassar matched the game-high lead of 19 points twice in the early stages of the final stanza, before Union put together a 13-0 run capped by a Kennedy Clark three-pointer to slice the Brewers' lead to 61-55 with 3:53 left to play.
  • The Garnet Chargers would get as close as six points on two more occasions down the stretch, but Vassar connected on four free-throws to spread the lead to the final 10-point decision.
  • Vassar cooled to 31.3-percent shooting after halftime and finished the second half 3-for-10 from three-point range.
  • Including a 53.3-percent effort in the fourth quarter, Union converted at an even 50-percent in the second half and went 4-for-9 from three-point range.

 

For The Brewers

  • McDermed reached 20 points in a game for the third time this season and missed matching her career-high by just two points. McDermed finished the contest 7-for-16 from the floor and 5-for-8 from three-point range and closed the game with nine rebounds, three assists and four steals.
  • Harvey reached the 20-point plateau for the fifth time, going 9-for-18 from the field with a trio of three-pointers. Harvey rounded out the victory with three rebounds and four steals.
  • Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) chipped in 14 points on 6-for-12 shooting and joined McDermed with a team-high nine rebounds.
  • Tawney finished off the victory with six points, five rebounds and a blocked shot.
  • Caroline Siekman (Islesboro, ME) scored the only two bench points for the Brewers on the night, adding three rebounds and three assists.

 

For The Garnet Chargers

  • Jelena Perovic was one of three players in double-figures with a team-high 16 points. Perovic closed a double-double with a game-high 16 rebounds and added three assists and a pair of steals.
  • Jenna Forman totaled 15 points, nine rebounds and a game-high four blocked shots.
  • Emma Riley came off the bench to score 15 points, going 6-for-13 from the floor with three triples.
  • Clark finished with three points and led all players with six assists while adding four steals.

 

Game Statistics

  • Vassar finished the night shooting 34.3-percent overall and went 8-for-25 from three-point range.
  • Union converted at 41.9-percent and connected on five of its 16 three-point attempts.
  • Vassar outscored Union 14-3 from the free-throw line.
  • Vassar forced 22 turnovers in the game, leading to a 26-13 edge in points off of miscues.
  • The Brewers held a 14-2 edge in fast break points.
  • Union controlled the paint, outscoring Vassar 40-28 inside.
