McKinney's career night leads Redlands Women's Basketball past Chapman 71-64

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's basketball team (7-8, 3-4) got a bounce back Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win inside Currier Gym on Monday evening as they beat Chapman University in a competitive game, 71-64.

Aliyah Anderson helped get the scoring started as she found Carly Hicks for a three. Anderson then converted on a pair of free throws as the Bulldogs were out in front, 5-2, in the first two minutes.

Trailing by one with less than six minutes to play, Colbi Zorich made a jumper in the paint and converted the and-one and then 16 seconds later she got an offensive rebound and scored in the paint to put Redlands up four, 12-8.

After holding a few early leads, the two sides went back-and-forth as the quarter was tied at 14, 16, and then 21 when the Panthers made a three in the final 30 seconds to send the teams into the second quarter all locked up.

Leaya Mckinney got going to begin the second quarter as she took advantage of her own offensive rebound and converted on an and-one to make it 24-21.

The lead would be as large as nine, 30-21, with 5:38 on the clock as Anderson, Zorich, and Mckinney all scored while the defense continued to hold the Panthers scoreless.

Chapman would respond with the next six points as they got within two, but AJ Wick drew a foul with 1:22 left in the half and Redlands were able to take a five-point lead, 32-27, into the break.

Hicks began the second half the way she did the first as she hit a three to make it a three-possession game as Zorich got the assist.

Zorich then made it a double-digit game for the first time with 7:41 to play as she made a pair of free throws.

Redlands would lead by 10 as late as 4:28, but Chapman went on an 11-2 run down to the 11 second mark as it was only a one-point game, 45-44. Mckinney, however, continued her hot shooting as she got out on a fast break and Anderson found her for the easy score with three second on the clock.

The Bulldogs would lead throughout the fourth quarter as they were up by eight on multiple occasions and used a 13-of-15 mark at the line to close out the game as the two sides combined for 44 points in the quarter.

Mckinney missed her first career double-double by one rebound as she finished with career-highs of 11 points (5-6 FG) and nine rebounds. Zorich had a game-high 19 points (11-11 FT) and added 10 rebounds. Hicks had 15 points (5-8 FG, 3-3 3FG, 2-3 FT) and Anderson had 10 points (4-4 FT), 10 rebounds, and five assists.

The Bulldogs will play their third game in four days as they travel to Pasadena this Wednesday, January 17 for a matchup with the California Institute of Technology with tipoff at 7:00 p.m.
