Women's Basketball Suffers Loss to Rhodes

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Berry Women's Basketball (7-6 overall, 1-1 SAA) fell to preseason favorite, Rhodes College (7-5 overall, 2-0 SAA) in tonight's Southern Athletic Association match-up, 56-51.

Kenadie Lee's 25-point performance was not enough to hold off the Lynx in today's tough SAA game.

From the tip, both teams played a close game with Rhodes making the first bucket and Berry answering quickly after. This scoring affair went on until the 3:34 mark when Sarah Wright's jumper gave the Vikings a one point advantage at 8-7. Lauren Ellard and Lee each chipped in a pair of free-throws in the final three minutes and held the lead into the second quarter at 12-9.

In the evenly matched game, neither team found a field goal until the clock hit 5:48, and it was Rhodes who claimed two. The Lynx reclaimed their lead at 14-12 and Sylvia Kahoro tied it up with foul shots. The game reverted back to the back-and-forth affair with each team sinking key free-throws. However, the Lynx had a two point advantage heading into halftime at 23-21.

Elly Callihan quickly tied the game to start the third, but now it was time for the Lynx to strike from behind the arc. With two consecutive threes, Rhodes took an eight point advantage as the Vikings attempted to trade out baskets but was unsuccessful. Gaining their largest lead of 13 off their third made three of the quarter (38-25) with a minute remaining, Berry still struggled to answer from behind three land as they had not hit one all night. Lee cut the deficit to nine before heading to the final 10-minutes of play (38-29).

Through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, Rhodes held a double-digit lead, that was until Lee came alive. Lee single handedly scored seven of the Vikings nine points in three minutes, one of those field goals being the only three for her team all game. That three turned the momentum for the game as it cut the Lynx lead to five (51-46).

Ellie Gearing chimed in with a clutch jumper to make it a one possession game, and key free-throws left the Vikings in a good position down by one with a minute remaining (51-50).

Rhodes sunk a free-throw and followed it up with a made layup after a devastating Berry turnover. With the Lynx up by four with twenty seconds remaining the Vikings late comeback was not enough to take down the preseason favorite, Rhodes.

Women's basketball returns to action in the Cage on Sunday against another SAA opponent, Hendrix College at 1:00 PM ET.
