Second quarter effort ends in Mustangs trailing Pride

CHESTER, Pa. – Stevenson women's basketball was tested early, but put up a fight against conference opponent Widener University Saturday afternoon. The final score was 64-43 in favor of the Pride.
 
Widener got on the board early in the first quarter, testing the Mustangs in the first three minutes. Sophomore guard Erin Dixon scored first for Stevenson off a jumper at 7:07. Despite several chances to score, the Mustangs allowed the Pride six more points. With 50 seconds remaining in the first quarter, the Mustangs managed a successful free throw, bringing the quarter to an end with a 12-3 score.
 
Ready to close the early gap, the Mustangs saw their first successful attempt following three misses with a three-pointer from junior guard Emori Jeselskis at 7:06 on the clock. Then a 10-point game, Jeselskis followed under a minute later, adding two more points. Jeselskis and sophomore forward Tessa Boswell then each added a three, and the Mustangs trailed the Pride 16-14 with 4:56 remaining. After three misses from the Pride, sophomore guard Erin Dixon tied the game 16-16 on a layup with 3:46 remaining. However, the Pride stormed back, and the Mustangs trailed at the half 27-18.
 
With both teams at high defense into the third quarter, the Mustangs got on the board first on a three from Boswell, which was quickly followed by a jumper from first-year guard Elia Richardson. Dixon brought the game to a two-point deficit, scoring once again in the paint at 6:54 on the clock, and junior forward Stephenae Lawrence added a layup at 5:28 remaining. The Pride continued to be a force offensively as the Mustangs ended the third seeing two more scoring chances, both from first-year center Amanda Nwankwo and a successful free throw series from Jeselskis. The quarter ended with the Pride ahead 47-34.
 
As Widener approached 50 points in the fourth, Jeselskis scored on a jumper just over a minute into play. A late play in the quarter included a free throw from Lawrence, and baskets from sophomore forward Sanaa Thorne and sophomore forward Aliyah Jean-Jacques. With 46 seconds left, first-year guard Amoni Taylor added one more in the paint, which the Pride answered with a layup of their own, bringing the final score to 64-43.
 
Jeselskis put up another consistent performance, totaling 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while going 2-3 at the three and 4-12 on field goals. With five rebounds, Boswell totaled six points and a steal, and went 2-9 at the three.
 
The Mustangs return home for more conference play, taking on the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans on Wednesday, January 10 at 7 p.m.
