Park Scores 24 Points in Double Overtime Thriller for Randolph-Macon Women's Hoops

How it Happened

  • Lynchburg jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first period with a three pointer by Bree Spainhour and two free throws by Sami Sever. Park knocked down a three pointer to get Randolph-Macon back into the scoring column. The Hornets ran the lead back to 8-4 with 6:05 left in the first period with a three point conversion by Brooke Cason. Elkins led the Yellow Jackets to a 7-0 run that lasted four minutes as the sophomore accounted for four points, to give RMC an 11-8 lead. Park made back-to-back lay-ups to end the period and complete an 11-1 run to give Randolph-Macon a 15-9 lead. 
  • Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) ran the Lemon and Black lead to as much as 11 (22-11), when she knocked down a long distance three-pointer at the 8:03 mark in the second period. Park and Elkins each had six points in the second period to lead RMC on the offensive end. LYN never let the Yellow Jacket lead grow to more than 11 and got the lead down to as much as six. Park's jumper at the buzzer sent Randolph-Macon into the locker room with a 34-26 lead. 
  • Lynchburg turned the intensity on the offensive end to start the second half, as RMC's early offensive success turned cold. The Hornets began the third period on a 10-2 run to tie the game up at 36-36 with 4:32 left in the period. Spainhour and Sever each scored four points and a Darcy Ross jumper tied up the game during the run. Randolph-Macon scored the final four points of the period with an Emion Byers (Louisa County, Va./Louisa) mid-range jumper and two Cait Velez (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan) free-throws to give RMC a 40-36 lead heading into the final ten minutes. 
  • Park made a driving lay-up at the 7:43 mark in the fourth period to give the Yellow Jackets a 49-42 lead. Lynchburg fought its way back and Olivia Harris tied up the game on a jumper with 18 seconds left to ultimately send the game to overtime at 54-54.
  • Both teams scored five points in the five minute first overtime period. Park made a tough jump shot to tie up the game at 59-59 with nine seconds left. LYN turned the ball over and Randolph-Macon had a great look for the game-winning shot, but the game would head to a second overtime. 
  • The Hornets made a jumper with 18 seconds left to put the game out of reach and thus won the instant classic 69-63. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Randolph-Macon shot 32.9% from the floor, as LYN knocked down 35.7% of their shots.
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the Hornets 51-to-38.
  • Park ended the game as the leading scorer for RMC with 24 points for a season high. The junior also pulled down six rebounds, dished out an assist and had a steal and a block. 
  • Elkins also ended the evening with an impressive performance with 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals. 
  • Velez scored nine points which is a career high for the Connecticut native. She also grabbed six rebounds, had three assists and three steals.
