Elizabethtown drops #3/5 Scranton from the ranks of the unbeatens

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team won three of the four quarters in Wednesday night's Landmark Conference showdown with nationally-ranked Scranton at Thompson Gymnasium. The Blue Jays rebounded from a slow start to knock the Royals from the ranks of the unbeatens with a 67-64 win behind 25 points from Summer McNultyCyleigh Wilson added 15 and DaniRae Renno recorded a double-double in the victory.

Kaci Kranson was a third of the Scranton (11-1, 4-1 Landmark) offense in the first half, hitting 13 points by the break. She helped the Royals get out to an 18-11 lead after the first quarter as the Jays were sluggish from the floor to start.

Elizabethtown (8-4, 4-1 Landmark) got its mojo going in the second quarter as they settled in. They went 8-for-14 from the field and 3-for-3 from deep as Wilson hit a pair of treys and McNulty knocked down the other.

Rebounds and free throws were key in this game as Scranton's rebounding margin on the season was a plus-17.2 coming into the night, but the Blue Jays owned the glass in each half. Elizabethtown was plus-five in rebounds over the first two quarters and finished the game plus-eight, 40-32.

The Royals led by as many as seven in the second, but Makenna Mummert's three-point play spurred a 6-0 run to make it a one-point affair after Wilson drilled a three with a little over half the second quarter to play. The senior would hit her second of the quarter a few minutes later to once again make it a one-point game. The Royals led by one, 35-34, at the half.

Jessica King and Renno gave Etown the lead briefly early in the third with back-to-back makes on consecutive possessions. McNulty and Wilson led the charge over the remainder of the third as they helped EC build a four-point lead both from the field and the free throw line. McNulty was 7-for-8 on the night while Wilson canned a pair late in the game.

Cass Peris broke an early tie in the fourth quarter with her foul line jumper and then after a Scranton turnover, McNulty dropped in another jumper to push the Jays' lead to four. The Royals would get back to even and then take a lead a few moments later as Kranson gave her team the lead with her and-one with six minutes remaining.

The teams went back and forth as they exchanged one-point leads down the stretch. Maddy Ryan put Scranton ahead by one with a last-second shot attempt to beat the shot clock buzzer with 3:33 to go, 62-61. The Royals held the lead over the next two minutes before a pivotal few seconds at both ends of the court.

Renno had the ball in the lane and began to drive. The defense forced her to pick up her dribble and she dished the ball out to the left wing to McNulty, who was ready and waiting for the ball. In the same motion, the junior caught and released a three-pointer that swished in with 1:36 to go to put Elizabethtown ahead, 64-62. Then, at the other end, McNulty came up with a big defensive play as she took a charge on former teammate Kaeli Romanowski, who was driving toward the basket.

The Blue Jays held their lead as the defense did its job. Scranton missed on a three-point attempt that was collected by Renno, one of her game-high 13 rebounds. Wilson then drew the foul and went to the other end and knocked down both. Ryan came back and sliced into the lead with her basket.

The Jays split at the foul line as they had a three-point lead going into the Royals' final possession of the game. Meghan Lamanna missed a jumper with four seconds left, Mummert grabbed the ball and Scranton couldn't get the foul called in time as the clocked expired and the Blue Jays won.

Elizabethtown ended the evening 14-for-16 at the foul line (87.5 percent) and held Scranton below their season shooting average on the night.

The women's basketball team will travel to Wilkes on Saturday, January 6, to take on the Colonels at 4 p.m.
