Scots Open CCS Play with Win over Wesleyan

MARYVILLE – Every player who dressed for Maryville saw action as the Scots defeated Wesleyan 71-47 Tuesday night in the Cooper Athletic Center. MC kicks off its conference season 1-0 while the Wolves fall to 0-2 in CCS play.

Maryville head coach Darrin Travillian was ecstatic about the opportunity to get all 16 of his active players on the floor.

"It was great to give everybody a little taste," Travillian said. "These kids come out and practice hard every day, so you want to try to get them on the floor and reward that whenever you can."

"I think we saw a few players that you're like 'hey maybe we can look a little more in that direction' while also figuring out what we can improve on offensively and defensively."

Maryville fell behind 4-0 right away but the Scots quickly fought back with back-to-back jump shots from Ella Tharpe to tie the game. Ella Haney would make a free throw to put the Scots ahead 5-4 and they wouldn't fall behind again.

Three of the four quarters were competitive, but a big third period from the Scots widened the gap and sealed the victory for Maryville. MC outscored the Wolves 25-12 in the first 10 minutes of the second half. If you remove the points scored in the third, MC led just 46-35 in the other 30 minutes of play.

This was the Scots' first game in 14 days, coach Travillian discussed how his squad shook off the nerves and found their stride in the second half.

"You saw some of the rust and some of the lull," Travillian said. "But then we had a stretch where we started to look a bit more like what we looked like before the break."

"We were moving the ball, we were getting some steals, we were attacking the boards. That run in the third is what we needed. That's where we've got to be."

Nine different players recorded points for Maryville, led by 14 from Courtney Carruthers in just over 14 minutes of play. The fifth-year senior was 2-of-2 from three and hit 4-of-5 shots from the charity stripe.

Right behind Carruthers was first-year guard Ella Tharpe who picked up a season-high 12 points as well as a season-high seven rebounds, six of which were of the offensive variety.

Maryville outrebounded Wesleyan 61-30, picking up 24 offensive rebounds. The Scots were led by Emma Huskey, who recorded 10 rebounds.

Maryville is back on the road for its next contest, taking on CCS-foe Belhaven Tuesday in Jackson, Mississippi. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. Central.
