Knights Fall to #22 Amherst College in Florida

Daytona Beach, FL – Although the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team was able to stick close to number-22 Amherst College in the first half, but the Golden Knights couldn't keep up with the Mammoths in the second half, suffering a 67-34 defeat on Saturday at the Sunshine Shootout.

The Golden Knights felt to 2-8 overall while Amherst remained unbeaten at 9-0. Clarkson returns to Liberty League play next weekend when the squad travels to take on Vassar College and Bard College.

In the opening quarter, Clarkson traded points with the Mammoths, closing out the period down by just three (15-12) when Raelin Burns hit a 3-pointer with 1:21 to go. At the start of the second, the Knights closed to within one at 8:25 on a pair of free throws from Burns, and the team still trailed by just two near the midway point of the period. However, the Mammoths defense locked the Knights down for a stretch, giving up just a late basket from Cassidy Dumont with 34 seconds to go, and a 3-pointer by Kori Barach in the final seconds allowed Amherst to take a double-digit lead into the locker room (31-20).

Clarkson trimmed the margin to 10 points twice in the early going of the third, including a layup from Bella Doyle at 7:36 which put the tally at 35-25. Unfortunately for the Knights, that was the last points they would score for the quarter as Amherst went on a 16-0 run in the final seven-plus minutes to double up the Green and Gold. Clarkson pulled the lid on the basket to start the fourth on a 3-pointer from Doyle, but that would be as close as the Knights would get for the remainder of the contest.

Raelin Burns led the Knights with 17 points, shooting 4-for-6 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line and Cassidy Dumont tossed in 11 points. For Amherst Anna Tranum was 8-for-11 from the field, scoring 17 points to go along with seven rebounds. Kori Barach was 5-for-9 for 13 points and added in six assists and Alix Stuart scored 10 points, going 5-for-6 from the field.
