Miller and Ziegler lead Randolph-Macon over Guilford

The Basics:

How it Happened:

  • Randolph-Macon used a quick five point period from Ziegler to take an early 15-7 lead after the first ten minutes. After falling behind 3-0, the Yellow Jackets went on an 11-0 run that lasted 2:35 minutes. Ziegler scored all five of her first period points during the run and Miller added a three-pointer to force a Quaker timeout. Anna Giannopoulou accounted for five of the seven points scored by Guilford in the period.
  • Courtney McMillan cashed in on a driving lay-up to cut the Randolph-Macon lead to 17-14 with just over seven minutes left in the second period. The Lemon and Black answered with another run (11-2) that lasted over four minutes. Miller had the hot hand during the run, scoring six of the 11 points, including a three ball to cap off the run. The Yellow Jackets shot 75 percent from the floor (6-for-8) during the second period and forced four Quaker turnovers to take a 31-20 lead into halftime. 
  • The Yellow Jackets kept the hot hand to start the second half shooting 7-of-14 from the floor in the third. Sam Smith (Chesterfield, Va./St. Gertrudes) scored eight points in the period, Bella Bruce (Herndon, Va./Westfield) and Ziegler both matched each other with four points. Guiford struggled to keep the ball offensively, as they turned the ball over five times in the third period. RMC would take a 52-36 lead into the final period. 
  • Guilford battled back in the fourth quarter to get within ten points on various occasions, shooting 10-of-16 from the floor. The Quakers mounted up fouls early in the final ten minutes and the Yellow Jackets would seal the game in the final minutes 75-60 to stay undefeated (5-0) in the ODAC conference.   

Inside the Numbers

  • Randolph-Macon shot 48.1% from the floor, as GC knocked down 45.3% of their shots.
  • The Yellow Jackets outrebounded the Quakers 34-to-24.
  • RMC cashed in 24 points on 21 Guilford turnovers in the game. The Lemon and Black also had 15 second chance points. 
  • Miller ended the game as the leading scorer for RMC with 17 points for a career high. The sophomore also pulled down nine rebounds, dished out four assists and had two steals. She also knocked down four shots from behind the arc to cap off an impressive game. 
  • Ziegler also ended the afternoon with a career mark in points with 16. The junior went 3-for-6 from behind the arc and had three steals. 
  • Smith was all over the court today on offense and defense. The freshman ended the game with 15 points, had five assists, four rebounds, two steals and a block. 
  • Juliana Park (Fairfax Station, Va./Davidson Day) and Jane Elkins (Annandale, Va./Bishop Ireton) each had eight points.
