Millikin Women's Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season

The ninth ranked Millikin women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season falling 101-98 at Carroll University in overtime on December 9 in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

 

The game showed how hard it can be to win a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) road game with the contest featuring 14 lead changes and 12 ties.

 

Every time Millikin would build a lead in the game, the Pioneers would find a way to battle back. The Big Blue lead 82-75 on a Sophie Darden basket with 4:56 remaining in regulation. Carroll then went on an 8-0 run and used an Emilie Wizner three-pointer to take an 83-82 lead with three minutes to play in the quarter. The Big Blue battled back and used an Elyce Knusden free throw and baskets from Bailey Coffman and Sophie Darden to pull back ahead 88-83 with 28 left in the fourth. Another Wizner three-pointer pulled the Pioneers to within two. After Millikin went 1-2 from the free throw line, Natalie Gricius hit a three-pointer to tie the game.

 

Millikin pulled out a 96-93 advantage in overtime before Olivia Rangel hit two free throws an a three-point to put the Pioneers ahead for good with 133 left in the game.

 

Millikin committee four turnovers in the fourth quarter and combined to miss four free throws late in the fourth quarter and overtime. Millikin was 3-8 (37.5 percent) from the field in the overtime and went 0-1 from three-point range. Carroll made 3-4 in the overtime including one three-pointers in the overtime period.

 

For the game, Millikin shot 37-72 (51 percent) from the field and made 7-20 (35 percent) from three-point range. Millikin was 17-24 from the free throw line. Carroll show 53 percent (36-68) from the field and made 7-14 from three-point range. The Pioneers were 22-27 at the free throw line.

 

Knudsen led Millikin with 32 points followed by Coffman with 22 points and a team high six rebounds. Darden had 17 points and Matayia Tellis career high 16 points.

 

Rangel led Carroll with 30 points followed by Gricius with 21 and Wizner with 18.

 

Millikin is now 8-1, 2-1 while Carroll improves to 7-3, 3-1.
