Keuka College Women’s Basketball Tripped Up Against Houghton

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost their Empire 8 opener on Tuesday falling to Houghton University 96-48 at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.

Keuka College (1-6, 0-1 Empire 8) was led by Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) and Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey). Brown had 11 points and seven rebounds for Keuka while Cotter added nine for the Wolves.

Houghton University 96 at Keuka College 48

The Highlanders came out fast against Keuka College on Tuesday. Houghton scored the first 21 points of the game to take control. Mary Cotter got Keuka College on the board with a jumper but the visitors led 27-4 after one. 

Houghton University continued to extend their lead, hitting four threes in the second quarter. The Wolves were able to get to the line, making six free throws. Sydney Brown hit a three in the final seconds to send the game to halftime with Houghton leading 49-13.

Keuka College was unable to string a run together to get back in the game as Houghton had an answer for every Keuka basket. The Wolves trailed 74-24 going into the final quarter.

The Wolves put together their best ten minutes in the fourth. The Green and Gold outscored the Highlanders 24-22 in the frame. Keuka College made three threes and went a perfect 7-7 from the line. However, the deficit was insurmountable as Houghton continued on to the 96-48 victory.

  • The Highlanders hit 15 threes in the game while Keuka made three. Sydney Brown accounted for three of them with Mary Cotter and Laura Barrett (Fuquay Varina, N.C. / Southern Wake Academy) hitting the others
  • The seven rebounds by Sydney Brown were one off of her career-high
  • Maddie Kramer (Ringtown, Pa. / Nativity BVM) scored eight for the Wolves for the third time in seven games this season
