Women's Basketball Falls Short Against Piedmont

LAGRANGE, Ga. - Berry Women's Basketball fell in their second game at the CCS/SAA Crossover Classic to Piedmont University 67-61.

Elly Callihan made it through the rim in the first forty seconds of the game for an early Vikings lead. Piedmont answered with five quick points that included a three before Sarah Wright made her first three of her total four of the game to push Berry ahead 7-5. With two minutes left in the first, the Lions reclaimed the lead with a free throw that surged a few more points until the final minute when Kenadie Lee and newcomer Lauren Ellard sunk four points at the foul line to take a 15-13 lead into the second.

Freshman, Ava Travis showed out in the second quarter leading Berry scorers with six points and three rebounds in their effort to hold off Piedmont before halftime. The Vikings were up 30-27 at the half.

In the third, Berry made 4 three's shooting 57% from beyond the arc but Piedmont's second chance points dominated with a 16-14 quarter to cut the Viking's lead to one heading into the final ten minutes of the game.

Turnovers got the best of the team in the fourth as the Lions totaled 15 total points for the game off of Berry's turnovers. The Lions took the lead with an initial three in the fourth (46-44) and as they tried to pull away, Wright knocked down a big three to keep the game within one point. However, Piedmont answered with a pair of threes.

During the last two minutes, fouls to try and get the ball back to put up some Viking points resulted in makes for the Lions who held off the Vikings for the remainder of the game.
