Allyn Leads Women’s Basketball to 73-53 Road Win at Rivier

Nashua, NH --- Emmy Allyn (Rutland, MA) led the WPI women's basketball team to a lopsided 73-53 win on the road at Rivier University on Saturday night. The win improves the Engineers to 4-1 on the season, while the Raiders dip to 2-3.

Allyn continued the hot start to her career, beating her season-high with 24 points to lead WPI. The rookie shot 53% (8-15) from the field and 50% (5-10) from long range. Classmate Ava Giansiracusa (Wethersfield, CT) tallied her second-straight game in double figures, adding 13 points with five rebounds.

Also for WPI, Adrianna Niles (Tewksbury, MA) finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Alice Kelly (Wethersfield, CT) added eight points and eight boards. Shannon Reno (Millbury, MA) rounded out the box score with a team-high five assists.

For Rivier, Lyric Grumblatt (Manchester, NH) racked up game-highs of 31 points and nine rebounds. Alexa Dufries (Leicester, MA) chipped in with nine points and four assists, while Hannah Muchemore (Nashua, NH) added seven points in the loss.

Trailing 4-3 early in the first quarter, the Engineers put together a 13-2 run to open a commanding 16-6 advantage. Giansiracusa nailed a pair of threes in the frame, while Niles had five points.

WPI's scoring slowed in the second, but the defense again locked down, holding the Raiders to just five points. The Engineers' advantage grew to as many as 17 points, outscoring Rivier 10-5 to lead 26-11 at halftime.

In the third, another lopsided Engineers' scoring run put the visitors up 52-24. WPI outscored Rivier 26-13 in the frame, as Giansiracusa stayed hot with eight more points, including two threes.

Rivier opened the fourth quarter on a 7-3 run cutting the WPI lead to 55-31. The Engineers pushed the lead back to 27 (65-38) on an Allyn three with 3:58 to play, but an 8-1 surge from the Raiders made it 66-46 with 2:31 remaining. That was as close as the hosts would get, however, as WPI closed out the 20-point win.

The Engineers are back in action at home on Tuesday, hosting St. Joseph (CT) at 6pm. Rivier will host Redlands on Friday at 7pm.
