NORTHAMPTON - The top seed Smith College basketball team outscored SUNY Morrisville 40-12 in the opening quarter to roll past the Mustangs (20-8) in the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship First Round on Friday evening. The Pioneers improved to 27-1 with a 100-50 win at Ainsworth Gymnasium to set a new program record for wins in a season. 

The Pioneers left no doubt as it also established a new school record with 20 made three-pointers in the game. 

Game Highlights

  • Smith came out on fire, connecting on 4-of-5 three-pointers in the opening minutes of the game. Amelia Clairmont(Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) shot a perfect 6-of-6 from long distance as Smith went to the second up 40-12 thanks to a trey by Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) to beat the buzzer
  • The Pioneers continued its impressive play as it lead continued to build throughout the second stanza. Jane Loo's(Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) three-point play to end the half put Smith up 69-26 at halftime
  • Ellie Potvin (Holden, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) connected on Smith's 20th three-pointer of the night with 2:25 left in the fourth to make it a 99-45 game
  • Ella Sylvester's (Everett, WA/Everett) free throw with under a minute to play hit the century mark for just the second time in program history and first since the 2018 season


By the Numbers

  • Clairmont finished with a season-high 20 points on a career-best 6-of-7 shooting from three-point range
  • Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, Calif./Fairmont Prep Academy) added 15 points as she knocked down five from long distance, while Selam Maher (Hopkins, MN/St. Louis Park) posted a career-best 12 points
  • Smith's bench scored 55 points as the Pioneers held advantages in points in the paint, rebounds and second chance points
  • The Pioneers did a great job distributing the ball, finishing with 34 assists on 37 made field goals
  • Smith shot 56.9% (37-of-65) from the field, 51.3% (20-of-39) from long distance and 60% (6-of-10) from the free throw line
  • The Mustangs shot 27.1% (19-of-70) from the floor, 17.1% (6-of-25) from 3-point range and 75% (6-of-8) from the free throw line

Smith advances to the NCAA Second Round for the third-straight season in its five all-time NCAA Tournament appearances. The Pioneers will face St. John Fisher University on Saturday, March 4 at 7:45pm.
