Otterbein Shocks No. 14 Baldwin Wallace on Senior Day

More news about: Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – It was a special Senior Day inside the Rike Center for the Otterbein women's basketball program, which shook off a pair of tough defeats recently to deliver a 58-55 upset against No. 14-ranked Baldwin Wallace!

The Cardinals snap a seven-game losing skid in the series with BW, an NCAA Sweet 16 team last year that has now spent this entire season ranked in the national poll. But no matter how you slice it, the Yellow Jackets now fall to 18-3 and have dropped two of their last three.

HOW IT PLAYED OUT:

  • Otterbein recognized a pair of seniors prior to tip-off in the form of shooting guard Natalie Galaida and student manager Aleena Winston, who spent her first two years as a player.

  • Both offenses started well and the Cards led 19-15 after one quarter, shooting a smooth 56% in the frame compared to just 25% on the visitor side.

  • BW made a better push in the second quarter and shrunk the Cardinal lead to just a single point (28-27) by intermission.

  • Otterbein went scoreless for nearly four minutes to begin the third, as Baldwin Wallace strung together a 9-0 run to jump ahead by three possessions. Not going anywhere, the Cards battled back and received a huge banked-in, buzzer-beating three-pointer from Galaida to end the frame.

  • The fourth quarter saw ties at 45, 47 and 59 before Otterbein found some breathing room (55-51) after a timely driving layup from Katie McCrary

  • BW sliced that in half to 55-53 with 42 seconds on the clock, and McCrary then split a pair of free throws on the opposite end. A BW layup followed by McCreary making both at the charity stripe this time left Otterbein ahead 58-55.

  • The Jackets had six seconds to play but were unable to get off a decent look, settling for a 30-foot heave from the left wing that clanged off the back iron.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • McCrary led all players with 15 points while Kathleen DeCarlo (11) and Galaida (10) also reached double figures.

  • The Cards held a 28-18 scoring edge in the paint.

  • BW went just 6 of 23 from behind the arc, but hung close by converting 19 of 25 at the free-throw line.

  • Bella Vaillant led BW with 14 points in just 26 minutes on the floor.

LOOKING AHEAD:

  • The Cardinals, who now sit fourth alone in the OAC standings, will host John Carroll coming up in the mid-week before traveling to Heidelberg next weekend.
