Kelly Posts Double-Double at WPl Blitzes Emerson 83-63

Boston, MA --- A double-double from Alice Kelly (Wethersfield, CT) sparked the WPI women's basketball team to a commanding 83-63 road win at Emerson on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers run their season mark to 14-4 overall, 4-1 in NEWMAC play, while the Lions fall to 7-12, 2-2 in the conference. 

Kelly tallied her second career double-double with 21 points and a career-high tying 10 rebounds, as WPI outscored Emerson 25-13 in the first quarter, setting the tone for the buzzer-to-buzzer victory. Also for WPI, Alex Scariati (Scotch Plains, NJ) flirted with a triple-double in the game, finishing with eight points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. 

Elsewhere, Melanie Presseau (Manchester, NH) finished with 17 points, including making 5-of-7 from three, while adding five rebounds. McKenna Finken (Simsbury, CT) and Emily Raynowska (Simsbury, CT) also finished in double-digits in scoring for WPI, as Finken tallied 11 points and Raynowska added 10. 

For Emerson, Olivia Deslauriers (West Hartford, CT) led with 16 points, adding five rebounds, while Carla Pelino (San Jose, CA) added 11 points and team-highs of nine boards and five assists. Ella Bushee (Walpole, NH) chipped in with 10 points while Chelsea Gibbons (Foxborough, MA) had nine points and seven rebounds. Mackenzie Bruno (Howell, NJ) and Quinn O'Connor (Bethlehem, PA) rounded out the box score with seven points each. 

A 5-0 start to the game for WPI set the tone of the first quarter. Emerson kept it close early, trailing by just four at the midway point (10-6), but the Engineers closed the half on a 15-7 run to lead by 12 after one. Presseau bolstered the WPI offense in the frame, connecting on three from long range en route to 11 points in the first 10 minutes. 

Emerson got the lead to single digits early in the second, as a three-point play from Bruno made it 25-16. WPI extended its advantage to 15, rattling off an 8-2 run. The Lions started chipping away, using a 12-4 run over the next four minutes to narrow the advantage to seven points. WPI got the last point of the frame, making it a 42-34 lead for the visitors at the break. 

Both teams shot well from the field in the first 20 minutes of play, as WPI was 50% (15-30) and Emerson was 44.8% (13-29), but the Engineers connected on 6-of-10 from long range, while the Lions were held to just 1-of-8 from three. 

WPI wasted no time building back its lead at the start of the third, as the Engineers opened on a 6-0 run to go up 48-34. Emerson countered with five unanswered to get the deficit back down to nine, but the teams traded runs over the next four minutes until WPI led by 10 with 3:37 left in the frame. From there, the Engineers took over, closing the third with an 8-2 run to open up a 16-point advantage (63-47). 

Emerson made one last push to rally in the game early in the fourth as threes from Gibbons and Ava Salti (Melville, NY) got the lead down to 13 (69-56) with 7:13 to play. WPI immediately answered with a Kelly three that sparked a final Engineers' surge, as the visitors closed out a 20-point win. 

WPI gets back on the court on Wednesday in midweek NEWMAC action at Wellesley at 7pm. Emerson also plays on the road on Wednesday, battling Babson at 6pm.
