Mahoney Nets Career-High at Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. — Keuka College senior Killian Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) scored a career-high 22 points, but the Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost 84-53 to Houghton on Saturday.

Meg McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) joined Mahoney in double figures with 10 points as the senior duo led Keuka College (3-13, 0-9 Empire) in scoring.

Houghton scored nine of the first 11 points as the hosts jumped out to an early lead over the Wolves. Killian Mahoney hit a three to cut the lead to four, but the Highlanders scored seven straight. Keuka closed the first with seven unanswered points to cut into the Houghton lead, but the hosts hit a three in the final seconds to lead 24-17 after one.

Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) opened the second with a basket, but Houghton responded with 13 unanswered points to grow their lead. Meg McGwin ended the run with a pair of free throws midway through the frame, but Houghton was right back on the run with 11 straight points. This time, a Killian Mahoney three ended the stretch, but the game was in Houghton's hands as the Highlanders led 53-28 at the half.

Houghton University saw the game out in the second half. Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) scored all five of her points in the third quarter for the Wolves. In the fourth, Keuka College scored 10 of their 16 points from the free throw line, but the Highlanders would outscore the Wolves in each of the quarters. Houghton continued onto the 84-53 conference victory.

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will next return home for three straight Empire 8 games. The stretch will start next weekend as Keuka College hosts Russell Sage College at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center. Tipoff between the Wolves and Gators is set for 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27.
