Quakers Endure Battle with Bridgewater for 9th Straight

The Guilford College women's basketball team faced the Bridgewater College Eagles in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game. A matchup between two teams in upper part of the standings did not disappoint as the Quakers outlasted the Eagles, 62-58.

In the first, Bridgewater (12-4, 7-3) came out strong by making the first three points in the game. It wasn't long until the Quakers (15-3, 8-3) came back and tied the score at four. Guilford used a 9-0 run over two minutes to grasp the lead. GC held an eight-point (23-15) lead at the end of the first.

The Eagles started the second off by making a layup within the first few seconds. The hosts went on a 12-1 run to capture a 35-27 edge with four minutes remaining in the first half. With just 18 seconds left on the clock, Gauldin scored on a fast break to cap off an 8-2 run and close out the half with GC ahead by one (35-34).

The third was slow going for both teams. Most of the period was controlled by Bridgewater as it outscored Guilford 14-10 and led 48-45 going to the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Guilford battled in the fourth and and evened the score at 50 with 8:46 on the clock. Both sides exchanged field goals until Gauldin led the Quakers to a 6-0 stretch as she scored four of the points. The Eagles pulled within one score on two separate occasions but a layup from Anna Giannopoulou with five seconds on the clock sealed the road win.

Gauldin led all scorers with 20 points. Giannopoulou added 12 points and four steals while Courtney McMillan tallied eight points, nine rebounds and two steals. 

Both squads were evenly matched except the Quakers were 5-15 (33.3%) from three-point and 17-28 (60.7%) from the free throw line.

Guilford returns to the Ragan-Brown Field House against Hollins University on Wednesday, January 25. Start time is at 7:00 p.m.
