Lauer nets 30 in win over Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Emily Lauer (Knox, Pa./Keystone) netted 30 points while the Gator defense surrendered a season-low 41 points as the Allegheny women's basketball team picked up a 50-41 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win at Waynesburg Saturday (Jan. 14).
 
The Gators started the game on an 11-2 run, fueled by seven points from Lauer. The Yellow Jackets would cut the lead down to three, 13-10, but the Gators ended the frame on a 5-1 run to lead 18-11 after 10 minutes.
 
Waynesburg started the second on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 18. The teams then went back-and-forth the rest of the half with seven tied scores and lead changes. A late basket by Sarah Santicola (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) gave the Gators a three point lead, 28-25, heading into halftime.
 
Lauer led the Gators with 20 points and six rebounds in the opening half. Santicola had six points and five rebounds. 
 
The Allegheny lead grew to five points, 32-27, before Waynesburg tied the game at 34 late in the third quarter. A pair of free-throws by Jess Bickart (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) broke the stalemate as the Gators led 36-34 heading into the final quarter.
 
A three-pointer by Bella Wier (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and a driving layup by Alexis Caldwell (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) sparked a 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter. The lead grew to as much as 13 in the frame as the Gators picked up the PAC victory.
 
Inside the Box

  • Lauer scored 30 points on 14-of-27 (51.9%) shooting while also grabbing seven rebounds. This marked her second 30 point output of the season.
  • Santicola was just shy of a double-double with a team-high 12 rebounds and nine points. She also blocked a season-high five shots.
  • Bickart grabbed 10 rebounds with six points and four assists.
  • Caldwell had nine rebounds while Sofia Genareo (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern Central) had eight.
  • The Gators owned a 49-39 rebound advantage, including 21 offensive boards.
