Wolves Drop Conference Game to Alfred

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost on Friday night 69-43 to Alfred University in an Empire 8 game at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center.  

Keuka College (3-10, 0-6 Empire 8) was led by 12 points from Killian Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua) and nine rebounds by Ellen Lavonas (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton).

The Wolves got the first basket of the game, but Alfred answered with a 9-0 run to take the early lead. A nice mid-range jumper by Killian Mahoney snapped the run. However, Alfred did not let up. Their press forced nine Keuka turnovers in the opening quarter. The Saxons outscored the Wolves 12-2 over the final five minutes to lead 21-6 after one.

In the second quarter, the Saxons scored the first five points, pushing their run to 13 straight points. It was Mahoney again ending the run as Ellen Lavonas found the senior for the layup. Mahoney returned the favor to Lavonas a minute later to make it 29-10. Megan Brown (Middleburgh, N.Y. / Middleburgh) found Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) for a deep three in the final minutes, but the Saxons carried a 20-point lead, 37-17, into the locker rooms at halftime.

Alfred opened the second half on an 11-0 run. It was cut by a free throw by Ellen Lavona, but the Saxons answered with 10 more in a row to push their lead to 58-18. Keuka closed the quarter with eight in a row as Gianna Padula (Kenmore, N.Y. / Cardinal O'Hara) and Sydney Brown hit back-to-back threes. Lauren Hill (Cobleskill, N.Y. / Cobleskill-Richmondville) added a pair of free throws, but the Saxons took a 58-26 lead into the final quarter.

Keuka found their range from deep in the fourth as the Wolves outscored the Saxons 17-11 in the frame. Two threes by Killian Mahoney and Sydney Brown's third of the game highlighted the fourth for the Wolves, but the game was in hand as Alfred University continued onto the 69-43 victory.
