Mustangs Grind to Overtime 67-59 Conference Victory

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson women's basketball earned a crucial conference victory in overtime against Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opponent Lebanon Valley College as the Mustangs claimed the 67-59 decision, tying the game four times on the night.
 
Sophomore guard Laci Johnson remained consistent, notching 16 total points with pairs of steals, assists, and rebounds. First year guard Erin Dixon clocked a career-high 21 points for the Mustangs off the bench. She added five total rebounds, four steals, and two turnovers. Senior guard Morgan Pennick topped the team with six rebounds and six points in the pivotal victory.
 
FIRST QUARTER
The Dutchwomen scored early, totaling 19 total points in the opening quarter. The Mustangs had an early tie thanks to Johnson, but they had yet to find their pace. Dixon scored her early points about halfway in, but the opening quarter closed 19-10 in the Dutchwomen's favor.
 
SECOND QUARTER
While the Mustangs scored only five more points in the second quarter, they managed to remain consistent defensively as the clock ticked on. Dixon had two more points as the half rounded to a close with the Mustangs trailing 29-15.
 
THIRD QUARTER
The Mustangs saw the largest gap of the night early in the third quarter with a layup from LVC senior forward Daelyn Stabler, bringing the game to a 16-point differential. Trying to close the gap, Johnson notched a three pointer minutes later. Dixon added three points off free throws, adding to her record total before the final regulation period. The Dutchwomen's game was in their favor, 41-32.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
The Mustangs scored 22 points in the final regulation period, nearly doubling the night's total. Following some missed Lebanon Valley attempts and successful Mustang free throws off six fouls, Stevenson gained some traction. With efforts from Johnson, Pennick, and Dixon, the Mustangs secured a regulation- ending 55-55 tie for the first time this season.
 
OVERTIME
The Dutchwomen scored early points in the extra period from first year forward Kailey Eckhart, but the Mustangs remained resilient. Dixon's successful free throw tied the game again at 57-57, and the Dutchwomen tied the game one last time at 59-59 with just over two minutes left in the extra period before Dixon scored two perfect shots, securing their lead. Successful free throws from sophomore guard Emori Jeselskis secured the final 67-59 decision for Stevenson.

UP NEXT
The Mustangs improve to 4-8 overall and 3-1 in conference. The Dutchwomen fall to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in conference. The Mustangs continue conference play as they take on Albright College, currently ranked fourth in the conference, on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. The Dutchwomen host the top team in the MAC Commonwealth, Alvernia University, on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m.
