Five players score in double figures as W&J beats Geneva for 11th straight win

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Meghan Dryburgh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and Sarah Berardelli (Ambridge, Pa./North Catholic) each registered double-double efforts as the Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team used a balanced offensive output to secure a 76-55 road victory over Geneva College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Metheny Fieldhouse in Beaver County. 

The win was the 11th straight for the Presidents, who improve to 12-1 overall and 8-0 in PAC play. The loss drops the Golden Tornadoes to 2-6 in the league and 2-11 overall. 

Dryburgh finished with team highs in points (14), rebounds (12) and steals (4) as she recorded her seventh double-double of the season. The double-double performance was the first of the season for Berardelli, who finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Bryn Bezjak (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) tallied 13 points, four rebounds and four steals in the winning effort. Stellanie Loutsion (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) scored 11 points, which gave her double digit points for a third time in the past four games. Adalynn Cherry (Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area) finished with 10 points including a pair of made three-pointers. 

The Presidents led 26-15 after the first quarter before holding a 43-25 advantage at halftime. W&J outpaced Geneva by a 19-16 margin in the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw each team score 14 points as W&J closed up the 21-point victory. 

Geneva built an early 13-9 lead midway and later evened the score at 15-15 when Bailee Fletcher converted a jumper with 3:02 remaining in the first quarter. However, the Presidents put together an 11-0 run over the final 2:45 of the first quarter to build its lead. Back-to-back field goals by Dryburgh opened the run before Bezjak followed with a layup off an assist by Dryburgh. Skylar Bibbee (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) accounted for the final five points of the run with a layup at the 1:01 mark and a three-point field goal with 23 seconds showing on the first quarter clock. 

W&J stretched its lead to 15 when a layup by Koeck gave the Red and Black a 32-17 lead at the 5:18 mark of the second quarter. The Presidents maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half before Loutsion capped the second quarter scoring with a layup with just 12 seconds remaining. 

The Presidents quickly stretched the lead to 20 points when Berardelli made a layup tio make it 45-25 in the opening minute of the third quarter. The GT's cut the lead down to as few as 14 points but W&J responded with a three-pointer by Cherry and six straight points from Koeck late in the quarter to maintain its sizable advantage. 

W&J cleared the bench in the fourth quarter, which allowed Ally Fisher (New Kensington, Pa./Burrell) and Haven Briggs (McKeesport, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) to tally their first collegiate points. Fisher drained a three-point field goal at the 56 second mark while Briggs converted a layup with 21 seconds to play in the game. 

Victoria Koeck (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) filled the stat sheet with another strong all-around game. Koeck finished with eight points, seven rebounds, a career-best six assists and four steals. 

The Presidents finished with a 44-26 advantage in points in the paint and compiled a 24-13 margin in points off turnovers. 

Mia San Nichols paced Geneva with a team-best 13 points. W&J held Geneva well under its scoring average of 70 points per game. The Presidents limited the GT's to 29.4 percent on field goal attempts. Geneva converted just six of 32 three-point attempts. The Presidents put together a 56-41 rebounding advantage. 

W&J hosts Waynesburg for a PAC contest on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
