MC Dominates Boards en Route to 66-54 Victory

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – After falling behind in the first half, Maryville played hard over the final 20 minutes and knocked off conference foe Covenant 66-54.

The Maryville offense was led by Courtney Carruthers, who scored a season-high 26 points on 9-for-23 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Tale of Two Halves
Maryville finished the first quarter tied 14-14 as Emma Huskey grabbed an offensive rebound and put in a layup as time expired.

Covenant took control in the second quarter, going on an 11-2 run to start the period. MC slowly clawed its way back but still trailed 29-24 as the half expired.

In the third quarter, Maryville trailed by as many as nine points before a Carruthers jump shot with 7:52 remaining started a 12-3 run. Maryville trailed by just three points heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Scots quickly took the lead on another jumper by Carruthers with 9:08 remaining. That boosted MC to a 24-12 run to close out the game. From 7:52 in the third quarter through the end of the game, Maryville outscored Covenant 36-15.

"I thought in the second half we were better offensively," Maryville head coach Darrin Travillian said. "Just being aggressive and running you could run but also when we took jumpers, they were good inside-out jumpers, they were ball movement jumpers."

By Leaps and Rebounds
MC dominated the boards, outrebounding Covenant 52-35.

"The work we did on the boards was huge," Travillian said. "We outrebounded them by 17 and we had 26 offensive boards. Just monster work."

Emma Huskey led the rebounding effort with 12, including seven of the offensive variety. She also recorded 12 points as she picked up her third double-double of the season.

MC is now 2-0 in the CCS, as the conference season roll into full swing. Travillian understands the importance of these matchups and has discussed them with his squad.

"We've talked a lot about how the conference race is on now and the only thing we have in front of us is conference games." Travillian said. "You always want to get Round 1 with everybody in the conference. And if you can get Round 1 on the road, it's even bigger."

With two conference wins on the road down, Travillian and his squad should be feeling confident as the season continues.

MC returns to action Friday, facing off against LaGrange in the squad's first home game of the season. Tipoff is at 5 p.m.
