Wolves Fall to Golden Flyers in First Game of 2023

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team returned to the hardwood following the holiday break, but the Wolves fell to Nazareth College 58-42 in an Empire 8 contest on Tuesday night.

Meg McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) led Keuka College (3-7, 0-3 Empire 8) with 12 points and tied for the team lead with five rebounds. Killian Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) was also in double figures with 11 points and added five rebounds. Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) rounded out the team rebounding lead with five as well.

Nazareth College 58 at Keuka College 42

The Golden Flyers jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead over the Wolves. The Green and Gold got on the board as Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) found Meg McGwin under the basket for the layup to make it 7-2. McGwin would have both baskets for the Wolves in the quarter as Keuka trailed 13-5 after one.

Killian Mahoney scored the first four points for the Wolves to start the second quarter. Mary Cotter collected an offensive rebound and scored midway through the frame to make it a six-point game, 19-13. Sydney Brown made a basket with nine seconds left as Keuka College tied Nazareth 12-12 in the second quarter, but the Golden Flyers led 25-17 at the half.

Lauren Hill (Cobleskill, N.Y. / Cobleskill-Richmondville) had a steal and basket for the first points of the second half, cutting the lead to six. The Wolves would get the margin down to six multiple times in the frame, but the Golden Flyers widened their advantage. Nazareth closed with six straight including a steal and bucket at the buzzer to lead 43-29 after three.

Keuka College continued to fight in the final quarter. It was a close margin with Nazareth edging Keuka 15-13 in the frame. Killian Mahoney and Lauren Hill each knocked down threes for the Wolves in the fourth, the team's first of the game. Keuka would not be able to cut the margin back to single digits as Nazareth College continued onto the 58-42 victory.
