Maryville Falls 49-40 to Denison; In Action Sunday at 1 pm

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Maryville's rally was too little, too late, and the Scots dropped a 49-40 decision to Denison on Saturday at the Pat Deacon Classic, hosted by Transylvania.

Courtney Carruthers scored a game-high 18 points, raising her career scoring total to 993 as she vies to become the sixth Scot under head coach Darrin Travillian to reach 1,000 all-time points.

No other Scots reached double figures as Maryville finished just 13-of-55 from the floor for 23.6 percent. The Scots were 3-of-15 from downtown, with Carruthers cashing in two of those and Olivia Cathers making the other.

Maryville scored just 14 points in the first half, trailing Denison 10-9 at the end of one quarter and 26-14 at intermission. The Big Red reached its largest lead at 37-21 late in the third quarter before Maryville began to slice away at the margin.

Fourth Quarter Best Quarter
The Scots outscored Denison 19-12 over the final 12:24, with Carruthers scoring 10 of her 18 over that stretch. But it wasn't enough, and Maryville dropped to 1-3 on the young season.

Maryville held Denison to its lowest scoring output of the season, but this was the third game in four starts that saw the Scots score in the 40s. All three have been losses.

Maryville's bench gained a 13-12 advantage over Denison, led by Emma Huskey with 7 points and Cathers with 5. Courtney Farr was the Maryville rebounding leader with 7, and Huskey pocketed a career-high 5 steals.

Denison improved to 4-2 on the season and plays No. 2-ranked Transylvania in Sunday's championship game. The Scots meet Wilmington (Ohio), which lost 63-46 to host Transy for its first defeat of the season after four wins.

Tipoff Sunday for Maryville-Wilmington is 1 p.m.
