NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- In an incredibly balanced performance, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team scored 86 points with only one player in double figures as the Captains (4-0) downed Mary Baldwin University (0-3) by a 50-point margin, 86-36. All 13 players scored at least three points led by an 11-point effort in 12 minutes for fifth-year senior Sondra Fan.

The suffocating Captains' defense was on display throughout the first half, in which the home team managed just eight points on 4-of-25 shooting (16 percent). The first quarter in particular was a dominant showing for the CNU defense, holding Mary Baldwin to just two points on 1-of-10 shooting with 15 turnovers.

By halftime, the Christopher Newport pressure had forced 26 turnovers and scored 23 points off of giveaways. The Captains held the Fighting Squirrels empty for the first nine minutes of the game, racing out to a 20-0 start. CNU would score 38 of the first 44 points in the game, building a 32-point first-half lead headed into the intermission.

Balance was the name of the game from the opening whistle, as only Camille Malagar made more than one field goal in the first ten minutes. She led CNU with five points in the first quarter, while Anaya Simmons added three points and four rebounds. Five more CNU players also got into the scoring column in building the early 20-point advantage.

In all four quarters, no player managed more than two made field goals in a period as the Captains shared the ball incredibly well. CNU dished 18 assists on 30 made baskets including a game-high four dimes for Malagar.

Defensively, rookie Hailey Kellogg led the team with six steals in a team-high 22 minutes of action. Fellow freshman Makenna Zimmerman added four steals while Fan snagged three and Alexia Lindsey also had three. The Captains finished with 21 steals as a team and forced 42 turnovers.

The wire-to-wire win was the fourth straight to start the season for the Captains. The 50-point win is the 11th since the start of the 2020-21 season.

Christopher Newport will return to action this Saturday against Goucher College at 6:00 p.m. in the Freeman Center. Live stats and a live video webcast will be available at CNUsports.com.
